A cold glass clinked against steel and equally cold eyes watched the alcohol swirl around inside of it. The glass filled up to the brim and the liquid was turned off, a few drops of foam seeping down the side and over the hand that held it. Mr Tomlinson handed the drink to the man waiting, and put his hand out for money. His cold grey eyes-pulled into slits by both tiredness and the lack of fun-glared at the stranger until a five pound note hit his palm. He waited as the man turned his back and walked off to the dance-floor, before sighing quietly. The cash machine sprang open and he inserted the note inside.
His hands fell limp on the bar table, and long strands of dark hair fell over his face when he bowed his head down.
"Come on, Louis!" A happy voice shouted over the blazing music. A hand slapped between Mr Tomlinson's shoulder blades and patted his back. He groaned and shoved them off.
"Fuck off." He said, flailing an arm out lazily to the side where the voice had spoken. He stood up straight and cracked his spine. It popped loudly, relieving some pain, but not enough for the man to be satisfied.
"Are you still here?" He groaned again, looking at the blond-headed man who idled next to him. "I said fuck off."
"Well excuse me, Shorty, for trying to be friendly." The Irish accent snapped back, putting a hand on Mr Tomlinson's head. He retreated it quickly when the man pointed a knife at him. "You really are an asshole, Louis. You know that, right?"
The annoying Blondie-as Louis called him-didn't wait for an answer but simply turned his back to leave. Louis watched him walk away. The silent grey eyes turned a bit darker with anger and frustration but he kept quiet. He didn't care. He was tired, angry, and generally just bored from being in the same place every fucking day of his life since his wife had left him two years ago.
He glanced at the clock above the bar, the flickering lights made it hard to read but he managed to catch that if was almost half-three in the morning. His shift would be over in less than five minutes.
"Hey!" A drunk voice yelled from the other side of the bar. Louis' fingers clenched around the table he was leaning against for a second, before letting himself turn around.
"What?" He snapped, trying to stay as self-composed as he could. Despite it getting desperately hard to stay calm, he added, "-can I help you with?"
The man on the other side of the bar pointed at his friend as shouted, "Two beers, please."
Louis nodded and turned around to the shelves of glasses and cups. He rolled his eyes and muttered a series of swear words before filling two of the cheapest glasses. Again, Mr Tomlinson handed the drinks to the men waiting and put his hand out for money. His cold grey eyes glared at the strangers until another five pound note hit his palm. That was his life. Sleep at day, tend the bar at night.
Even as his boss approached him to tell him that his shift was over, Louis refused to smile. He couldn't. He'd forgotten how to smile.. ever since that day..
