There was one thing Ian doesn't know I do for Hailee. In fact, no one does. I try to keep it special. And a secret. One of Hailee's passion is acting. She is always in the school play. I'd watch her from my window to her rehearsing her lines in her bedroom like nobody was watching her. I even go to the plays that were usually held on Friday nights.
I sneaked out of the house just to go and watch her stand there on the stage with the attention all on her. When the play was Romeo and Juliet, she played Juliet. I was even there when there were auditions. Out the seven girls that wanted to be Juliet, she got the part.
"My only love sprung from my only hate." A line Hailee says, it wasn't acting, it was real. When she gets into character, she puts herself like the person. Any girl can play Juliet. But she is Juliet.
The costume she wore, a gown, the first scene was sky blue until the last death scene where she's in deep red. Where Juliet (Hailee) takes her own life with a dagger after Romeo died from the poison he drank. My usual seat was somewhere in the middle of the audience.
As I got older and began high school, I bought flowers for Hailee for her performance. Only she was being greeted by her family that came to watch her as well. Fear got the best of me. The red roses that just sat on my desk that night, looked somehow depressed. I barely bought those roses before going to the theater. They just gave me pity.
The car that Hailee's father fixed pulled in the garage. Giving me an idea. Grabbing paper and pen, I wrote a letter. Took me awhile to think of something to write. I can still remembers the first letter I wrote inside. It wasn't long. But it basically sums up my thoughts on the play.
The light that shines on you, everyone was watching, I was listening. The time you put into being the character with beauty, determined, adventurous, strong, confident, heartfelt, and a fighter. Any girl can play Juliet. You are Juliet.
Hailee's bedroom lights were on. I needed to finished this up. No time to sign it. Taking the bouquet of roses down the stairs, running a acrossed to the Steinfelds front door. Taking a deep breath. I rang the doorbell. Waiting patiently for someone to open the door. Ringing it again. Waiting. Then footsteps were heard. At the last minute I panicked. Laying down the bouquet with the letter on their doormat, running down their driveway to hide behind the large hedge that separates their property to the neighbors next door.
Peaking through the hedges, light came out from the opened door. A petite body steps outside. Looking from left to right. Nothing. Just as my hopes were coming down, she looked down at the roses. Picking them up. With the letter. She opened the letter, reading in silence, like she were alone. A small smile forms on her face. My heart did a flutter. Sniffing the roses, closing her eyes to take the sense in.
That night made me fall for her even more.
