Cal's Pov
Living with Harry has never been difficult. Sure, he's a little messy and not so helpful, but he's still young, so I excuse it. But recently, almost every night, he's been waking up both me and Callux with loud screaming.
The first time it happened, me and Cal barged into Harry's room expecting to see someone trying to harm the younger boy. Surprisingly, all we found was Harry sitting in his bed with his knees brought up to his chest and his head tucked in between them. He quickly glanced up at us. His eyes were red and full of fear, there were tears streaming down his face, and he looked so vulnerable. Not wanting to cause Harry anymore distress, me and Cal stayed close to the door and asked what was the matter. The only reply we got was a mumbled
"Nightmare, I'm fine. I'm sorry I woke you. You can go back to bed."
After he had spoke, he gave a shy smile and proceeded to occupy himself with something on his phone. Cal seemed satisfied with this answer, and walked out of the room and back to his bed. I lingered a bit longer, making sure there was no actual threat in the room. Once I decided that Harry was safe, I walked out of the room and closed the door behind me, but not before I heard Harry mumble a quiet,
"They're getting worse"
It had now been about a week of constant shrieks waking up the house. Like clockwork, every night Harry is screaming himself and both Cal and I awake. Cal stopped checking on him, but I continued to, just in case he wanted to talk about his night terrors. He never did. And he always sent me away with a faint mumble of
"Nightmare. Go back to bed."
In the morning, we would act as if nothing happened.
Callux had gotten fed up with the screaming, and went to stay with his girlfriend Sarah for a while. I could have chosen to do the same, and crash at the sideman house for a few days, but I didn't want to leave Harry alone. Especially when the nightmares were apparently 'getting worse'.
It's been about two days since Callux left, and Harry's nightly screams have continued. But tonight is going to be different. I'm not going to let Harry send me away with his usual 'I'm fine', I'm going to figure out what is going on, and hopefully help him. I'm worried about him, he's my friend, and honestly, I wish he was a bit more.
I didn't go to sleep that night, I wanted to be there for Harry the moment the nightmare started. At about half two in the morning, I heard slight panicked noises coming from Harry's room. I quickly bolted out of my room and into Harry's only to see him thrashing in his bed. I cautiously walked over to the side of his bed and kneeled down next to it, second later, the screaming started. I tried to shake him awake, tried to grasp his wrists and hold him still, tried to whisper comforting words to him, but nothing would wake him. He finally jolted up into a sitting position, tears falling from his eyes, the same as every night. He looked over at me and told me the same thing as every night. But I wasn't going to leave this time.
Instead of getting up and walking back to my room, I crawled into Harry's bed and cautiously made my way over to him. Once I was close enough to him, I used the bottom of my t-shirt to wipe away the tears that were collecting on his face. That didn't seem to make Harry uncomfortable, so i tried my luck and grabbed Harry around the waist and laid us down so that his head was resting on my chest and my arms were wrapped around his middle. Harry didn't seem phased by this, and had fallen asleep within a few minutes.
The next morning, I woke up in Harry's bed in almost the same position we had fallen asleep in, the only difference was that our legs were now tangled together. I looked down to see that Harry was awake and staring out of the window in his room, his fingers lightly drawing patterns on my chest. I shifted a little which caused Harry to look up at me and smile.
"Good morning. Thank you."
Harry's morning voice made my stomach do backflips as I thought about how nice it would me to wake up to this every morning. I smiled down at him, cherishing the moment.
"You're welcome. Let's go make some breakfast."
Harry nodded and lifted his head off of my chest so we could stand. Breakfast consisted of eggs and bacon, and we sat silently at the table as we ate. I wanted to know more about the nightmares Harry was having, I wanted to know if I could help. So I asked.
"Harry? What are your nightmares about?"
Harry looked up at me, a bit surprised.
"Different things every night."
He shrugged and continued eating his eggs.
I persisted in asking about the nightmares.
"I want to be able to help you with them, but I can't if you don't tell me about them."
Harry sighed, and looked up from his food. He stared at me for a minute before speaking.
"I'm fine Cal, you shouldn't worry so much."
This was not an answer I was looking for, so again, I insisted that there must be something I could do to help.
"Just tell me what I can do. I don't want you to go through this alone."
Harry didn't look up this time, but quietly asked,
"Can you sleep with me again? It made me feel safe when you held me."
I smiled and reached across the table to grab Harry's chin and force him to look at me.
"Of course I will sleep with you again."
Harry beamed at me, his smile so perfect.
That night, we fell asleep in each others arms, and Harry didn't wake up screaming.
