"Come in." I heard Mother Reenie's frail voice say once she had heard me knocking at the door. Shawn looked at me suspiciously but I just waved him off, twisting the doorknob and walking into her room.
The first things I ever noticed when I entered Mother Reenie's room were the giant, swinging chandeliers. Yes, chandeliers, as in plural. Mother Reenie's hotel room was different from any other one at the wonderful Hotel Midnight.
Maybe they started changing the size of hotel rooms a while after she had joined this wonderful establishment. I mean, Mother Reenie has been here for a long time, and when I say that, I mean a long time. Rumor has it, she was here when Mr.Rush became the manager.
Unlike everyone else here, Mother Reenie actually did age when she came into this hotel as a rebellious teenager. Well, at least she did until a certain point. She was an old woman, no lie, but even older than she looked. I mean, centuries old.
You'd think she'd turn sour, but Mother Reenie was such a sweet woman, despite the way that Sarah had described her.
Her choice of words could have been better, but I guess, in a non hurtful or judgmental view point, she was right. Mother Reenie wasn't technically a witch, but I swear she could have fooled me.
When Shawn and I walk into her room, the kind woman was seated at her Truth Table, her back turned to us. Shawn looks at me again, his facial expression even more confused than it first was.
Without turning around, Mother Reenie begins to speak to us.
"Take off your shoes please and leave them by the door, it's hard to scrub shoe stains off the carpet myself." She says, and anyone who hadn't known her well would have thought that she actually cleaned this place herself.
In reality, the Hotel cleaned for her. Like I said before, the Hotel takes care of itself, and since Mother Reenie refused to have maids come into her room and poke around, the Hotel cleans the room for her.
She's told me before that she enjoys making a mess, shutting her eyes, and re-opening them to find the whole room spotless.
Shawn walks over to the door, then taking off his shoes, and because I've decided I didn't feel like explaining all of the clean up process to him at the moment, I took my shoes off too, and placed them next to his.
"Checking if your relationship will last into the future is $5, but I'll make a discount for you two." She tells us, her back turned.
"It's Nora." I tell her, and although I couldn't see her face I could swear she was smiling.
"I know. I was only kidding. Not about the relationship part, but the discount."
I shake my head and laugh, then walking over to her and giving the woman a big hug. She smelled like lavender, a soothing scent. In all honestly, Mother Reenie never charged me for anything, but of course there were always those groups of teenagers trying to play with a Ouija board, so she decided to put a little price for those "unworthy".
"Mother Reenie, this is my friend, Shawn. We came because we need your help about something extremely important to us." I tell her, and she stares at me in an examining way, then extends her hand. I reach out to her and she stares at my palm for a moment, holding on to my hand softly.
Shawn makes contact with me, and he doesn't even need to say a single word for me to tell what he's probably thinking at this moment.
This woman is absolutely insane.
In response to his look, I mouth the words 'Harry Potter' and watch him nod his head in approval. Just then, Mother Reenie lets go of my hand and sighs.
