"I'm really sorry. She told me all about the man, and the second she saw him walk into this hotel she ran. She wanted me to give this to you though."
"I- I just don't understand. Where did she go?"
"We can take you, if you'd like." I tell her, my stomach pained with guilt.
I can't believe I'm doing this.
"Thank you so much! And by the way, the face paint you have on looks pretty real, good work." I could tell she was trying to be nice, but she was way too stressed and worried for that.
"Thanks. Do you know what time it is? I'm not allowed to leave this place without locking up at midnight, as dumb as that sounds."
Shockingly, the girl in front of me wasn't Caroline, despite her identical appearance. Instead, it was the sister she ran off with, Margo.
And how are you supposed to tell someone that their twin sister was killed by man eating creatures that hunt this hotel often?
So I didn't. And I don't think I've ever felt more terrible about lying in my life.
"It's 11:30 pm. I guess I don't mind waiting the half hour out, as long as you're both sure you know where Cora is hiding right now." Margo tells us after checking her watch, and I look at Shawn, my eyes clearly pleading for help.
"Great. We'll go get the key, and be back in a bit. You can wait here, the food is great." Shawn answers, filling in for me.
"Okay." Is all Margo says back, before Shawn and I both turn around and walk towards the exit.
"I'm going to throw up." I say once we're gone and on our way towards my room, feeling extremely sick.
"On the bright side, you won't remember any of this once we're gone." Shawn tells me, trying to cheer me up.
But how exactly was that the bright side, if I couldn't remember him after all of this?
"Right." I say, and freeze in my steps when I hear something.
Humming.
And even while humming, I recognized that voice instantly.
"Sarah." I whisper to Shawn, and slowly, we begin to walk forward. What I see next shocks me.
Sarah was shutting the door to my hotel room, a smile on her face. All I can do is watch as she turns around and begins walking the other way.
What was she doing in my room? And I had the "Do Not Disturb" card on my door too, so how did she even get in there?
Turns out, I didn't have the card on my door. And Sarah didn't ransack my room or anything. She only took one thing.
The key.
We rush to the candy shop, expecting to see her there, the key in her hand, but we don't. The shop was empty, with Sarah nowhere to be found.
"Fuck." I blurt, in complete alarm and fear. If we couldn't find the key in half an hour, I would be nothing but dust, and Shawn would be stuck here forever.
I begin to think of all the places she could possibly be right now, and my eyes widen when I realize there was only one place she could go once I eliminated all the other places.
The worker's floor.
But if she was in there, that meant she could never leave, because unless Mr.Rush grants you permission to come to the lobby and you're a worker, you aren't allowed to leave the floor. Seeing that Mr.Rush wasn't here, she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.
"Come on, she's got to be at the worker's floor." I tell Shawn, and we don't waste another second. In just a minute we reached the floor, and I ran into it quickly to see where I could find Sarah.
"Any clue where to look?" Shawn asks, and I shrug. This floor was pretty big, and I only knew one place that would help out.
So after just a moment, we're both standing in front the place I had gotten my first aid kit from. Before either of us can walk in, we hear a voice that makes us stop.
"Just like taking candy from a baby."
Sarah.
"I still don't see why you had to do that. She's gone in a moment anyways, there was no need to take it away." Another voice says, and my eyebrows raise. It was Marcus's.
"When Mr.Rush is back, he'll be so proud of our work he'll bring all of us to the lobby, and we won't be stuck here." Sarah says, and I hear Marcus take a deep breath before answering.
"You're right. Mind if I see it?"
"Go ahead. I'll be over at the candy room if you need me, don't take too long."
Shawn and I widen our eyes before rushing away from the door, Sarah opening it a second later. Humming, she begins to walk in a direction, and the moment she's gone, the door opens again, and another girl follows her.
"Lilly, don't take your eyes off Sarah, this key is ours!" Marcus calls, and I take a deep breath.
Lilly was here too?
She leaves a second later, not looking back once, as I look around for a weapon. I didn't want to hurt Marcus, but if I had to knock him out then I guess I had to.
The closest thing was an oil lamp and a baseball bat (don't ask, I wouldn't be able to answer) so I reach for the lamp, Shawn grabbing the bat.
Slowly we walk to the door, and after a whispered count of three, I turn the knob and push it open, knowing that after everything Marcus has been through, an oil lamp and a bat would do no damage to him.
