What Now?

I know it's him right away.

His hair is in a dark curly mess, and he's pale as a sheet. It seems like he's got something attached to him on every section of exposed skin, and I'm sure there's more under his clothes. His hands aren't much darker than the white sheet they rest on.

"Oh my God." Its barely a whisper.

"W-what am I supposed to do?" I ask, in a slightly stronger voice.

"Talk to him, tell him you're hear... touch his arm. Whatever you feel like you should do... I'll leave you alone."

She leaves, and closes the door behind her.

I sit down in the chair by his bed, still not sure what to do.

"Um... Hi Dyaln... Uh, I'm here... I don't really know what to say..."

I sit back and shut up, feeling stupid.

He's really kinda hot...

Is that really the right thing to be thinking about a kid who's DYING?

Probably not... but he is.

I roll my eyes at myself and then try to figure out what to do. I never really thought through what I would do when I actually got here. I realize I'm starving. And I have no place to stay. And I really don't have any money. Yikes. I really didn't think this through. Then the exhaustion hits me. I guess this chair is as good as any to fall asleep in...

Next thing I know, Cathy is standing over me, gently shaking me awake.

"I guess you'll be needing a place to stay, huh?"

I'm still foggy from my nap, so it takes me a minute to figure out what she said.

"Um... yeah... that would probably be good."

She nods, "I figured as much, and I gotta extra room at my place you can stay in. I'll feedja too, and no, you don't need to pay me, just do your very best to bring this boy back to us, okay?"

I nod, and she smiles down at me.

"Ready to go then?"

"Uh, yeah." I'm too tired to say anything else.
