"Martha, where is he?" I asked with panic the morning after, Clark nowhere in sight.
We'd been awake all night trying to figure out what to do. If Clark didn't give himself up then this General Zod was going to destroy the Earth. If he did surrender there was still no guarantee Zod wouldn't obliterate it anyway. There was no right answer, no way to make this better. To the people of Earth Clark was dispensable, a random guy they didn't know who'd been hiding in the shadows his whole life. He wasn't worth the world. To everyone else that was the case, to me it was entirely different. Clark was worth more, he was worth everything. Whatever happens, whichever solution Clark decides on, I lose the world in some way. Either the world in a literal sense, or the world in a personal one. My own world...Clark.
"He went to speak to Father Leone at the church. I think he needed some advice other than that of his mother and girlfriend," Martha said, walking over to me in the kitchen and then pulling me into a tight hug.
"He'll come back won't he? If he decides to turn himself in he'll come here first right?"
"I don't know honey. It might be too hard, for all of us."
"We have to do something. There must be..." Damn cell interrupting my sentence. I'm kind of busy having an emotional break down here.
"Hello?" I asked, seeing that it was a private number when I answered.
"Lauren, it's Perry."
"What is it?" I really didn't have time for this.
"Do you know what this is about? Do you know who this Kal-El is?" Why was he whispering?
"I have no idea."
"Well the FBI seems to think you do. They got hold of the information from the expedition. You and that guy Joe you mentioned were the only ones not accounted for when the ship disappeared. They're on their way to you now." Shit
"Talk about clutching at straws. Anyway, they don't know where I am. It's fine."
"You took a short haul flight to Kansas five days ago. The only connections you have left in your old hometown are a family called the Kent's. Lauren they know everything about you. They're the FBI."
"God Perry. How long?"
"They could be there any time. Lauren, if you know anything about this guy you need to tell them. This is the planet we're talking about."
"You think I don't know that?"
"Lauren, listen to..." I really couldn't deal with this right now.
"No Perry. I've gotta go. I'm sorry." I didn't even give him a chance to reply. I hung up on him before he could say another word.
"Lauren sweetie, what is it? What's wrong?" Martha questioned with worry when she saw me suddenly start pacing back and forth in the hall.
"The FBI are coming. They know where I am. They think I know something."
"Do they know about Clark?"
"No. They think I know Kal-El. They don't know he's Clark though."
"Why would they think that?"
"Because of the expedition where I..."
"What is that?" Martha voiced suddenly, a loud and fast rumbling noise coming from outside.
Without giving an answer I quickly went to the kitchen window and looked out, not really surprised when I saw a group of blackened out FBI vans coming up the dirt road.
"They're here."
"Lauren, we need to call Clark. We need to tell Clark."
"Martha, calm down ok. I can handle this. I can handle the FBI. This doesn't change anything. If Clark decides to hand himself in then I'll see him there. If he doesn't, well they'll have to let me out eventually. Don't call him, he'll just panic and come rushing. They'll figure out who he is."
