SHAWN

I unlocked the door to Tim Hortons, and made my way to the back of the counter after turning on the lights. It felt so good to be in a heated room, rather than outside in the slightly cold and crisp, September air. I checked the cash register to make sure that no one took anything, something I've been doing often lately. There wasn't much currency present since nobody really comes here anymore. A Starbucks just opened across the street a few weeks ago and Tim Hortons is on the verge of closing already. I took my coat and mittens off, leaving me in my turtleneck and jeans. The bell above the door rung, causing my head to snap up, cutting off my thoughts.

"Are you open?" A beautiful girl with big, creamy brown eyes asked.

"Y-yeah," I stuttered, "we just opened." She smiled at me and I returned the friendly gesture. She walked up to the counter and slipped off her coat.

She started to tap her foot on the ground and her facial expression showed that she was in deep thought. I couldn't help but stare. She sure was beautiful. Her long, wavy brown hair flowed just bellow the middle of her back and it turned a lighter shade as it got longer. Her hair looked natural and the bit of sun shining through the window gave her a radiant glow that was irresistible. Her big, creamy brown eyes swished right to left as she studied the menu above. Her lips were pressed together and her eyebrows were scrunched up. She had an adorable nose and her small figure was about five foot five inches.

"Excuse me?" She questioned. Did I zone out? Was I staring? Oh my gosh.

"I'm sorry, I zoned out. What can I get you Miss?"

"You don't get much business here anymore huh?"

"Yeah, it kinda sucks since this is the only Tim Hortons in Pickering and I love this place." I answered, looking around the room in awe.

"I've never been here before, but it seems a lot cozier than Starbucks. Starbucks is so loud and people are always in such a rush."

After a moment of awkward silence, I finally spoke up. "So what can I get you?"

"What would you recommend, a blueberry muffin or a chocolate chip muffin?"

"Yikes, that's the only question I cannot answer, I love 'em both." I smiled.

"I'll have one of each," she paused and smiled, "and a hot chocolate please."

"Coming right up." I grinned. After she paid, I went to the pastry window and slid it open. Ah, fresh muffins in the morning. I grabbed the muffins that she ordered and placed them in a bag and started to heat up her hot chocolate. The Tim Hortons playlist started to play A Team, by my greatest idol, Ed Sheeran. It was kinda ironic since the words that Ed used to describe his love sort of portrayed the girl. I started to quietly sing and hum my favorite parts of the song. The small timer dinged and I poured the hot chocolate into a cup and made my way over to the girl.

"Aren't you supposed to call me up so I can get my food?" I placed the items on the table she was sitting at.

"It's alright. It was a pleasure to serve you since nobody really comes here." I pulled out a chair and sat across from her. I watched her take a bite out of her first muffin. She smiled at me, meaning she's enjoying the food.

"So what's your name?" She asked me.

"I'm Shawn." I said, giving my hand out for her to shake.

"S-h-a-w-n?" She spelled out.

"Yup."

"So how old are you Shawn?"

"Sixteen, and you are?"

"Sixteen as well." She smiled.

"Did you just recently move here? I've never seen you around before."

"My family and I moved here last night. There was nothing to eat at home yet." She giggled. Her laugh made me smile, something I haven't done in a very long time. I didn't even notice that I've smiled more since she came here than the whole year. She makes me smile and I barely know her. I don't even know her name for goodness sake!

"I've lived here my whole life."

"Only child?" She asked.

"Sadly, no." I paused, thinking of Aaliyah. Dearest Aaliyah, I miss her so much. She lives with my grandparents now and I don't see her anymore.

"I'm an only child, I've always wanted a sibling, but my parents never gave in." She giggled.

"I have a little sister."

"Aww."

"Yeah, but I don't see her much anymore."

"Do you mind if I ask why?"

"I kinda do, sorry. I'm not comfortable with telling that story, maybe one day though." I said.

We talked for hours, all the way up to closing time. She continued to talk while I went to the counter and opened the cash register, slipping in a few bills.

"Well I gotta go Shawn, it was great talking to you." She said, walking out the door.

"Wait! Uh-um-" I just realized that I never got her name. I pushed the door open and searched for her. I grunted loudly and stomped my foot on the floor. Where could she be?

A small giggle filled the quiet air and I saw her beautiful brown eyes across the street. The moon reflected off of her eyes and I swear, I felt my heart flutter.

"I never got your name!" I called out, cupping the sides of my mouth to sound louder.

"It's Madison, Madison Brooks!" She yelled, putting on her hood from her coat and walked away into the dark.

I stood there, watching her walk into the darkness and get smaller and smaller.

Madison, Madison Brooks.
