SHAWN

"Get your lazy ass up." He slurred.

I took a quick look to my alarm clock and saw that it was 6:30 am, earlier than my usual wake-up-time. I slammed my hand on the off button so my clock won't alarm. I shot up and quickly grabbed the clothes on my desk that I prepared last night. I made my way into the bathroom and washed my face. That's a new one, a small gash below the corner of my right eye. As if I don't get enough shit at school.

New school year, new people, new problems.

"Hurry up in there!" He yelled, banging on the door. There are three bathrooms in this house, all have showers, a sink and a toilet. I have no idea why he wants me to hurry when one of the three is occupied.

I turned on the water in the shower and brushed my teeth while waiting. When the water was ready, I stripped down and hopped in, letting the hot water run over me.

"What the hell is taking you so long?!" My father questioned. I didn't bother to answer. I learned that I should only answer his questions when he doesn't ask by yelling, but sometimes I have no choice. Once I was done, I dried off and changed. I ran my fingers through my hair a couple times, then walked out, hanging my towel behind my door on the way. I heard hurling noises coming from my parents' bathroom so that's was basically cue to leave. I grabbed my backpack next to the couch, put on my shoes, slipped my phone into my pocket, and grabbed a muffin.

"I love muffins do do, do do do, I love muffins..." I sang and awkwardly danced across the living room door. I heard a laugh coming from the couch.

"You never fail to make me smile Shawn." My mother's weak voice said. She was sitting on the couch, I was lost for words, I didn't know what to say. She hasn't talked to me in months, why now?

"I-I have to go to school now." I quickly said, shoving my muffin in my mouth and ran out the door.

My mom hasn't talked to me in six months, why now? She didn't even talk to me on my birthday!

I stood outside hell's doors and pulled out my phone to check the time. I entered my school, forgetting that I'm the joke of the town.

"It's the Mendes kid, I'm surprised that he showed up."

"He must be really brave to show his face."

I pulled my hood over my head, hoping that would help, but it didn't.

"That's the kid?"

"I thought Josh got rid of him."

"Joshua Spencer, the jock from last year broke him, I think."

"He didn't break me!" I screamed. Everyone looked at me shock, as if they didn't know that I could speak.

"He's such a freak."

"What the hell is his problem?"

"No wonder no one likes him."

"He has issues."

I tried to ignore all of their whispers and comments, but they were getting inside my head. Their words banged against my skull and my head started to spin. My locker was still another hallway down, so it was a long walk.

"I think he gets hit at home."

"I can hear all of you!" I screamed, they all started to back away as I dug my hands deeper into my sweater pockets and gritted my teeth. I instantly regretted ever speaking or coming here today. More drama to start this Monday. I walked over to my locker and twisted my combination in. I grabbed my books for first period and shoved them into my backpack.

"Ugh!"

"Need any help there Brooks?" I walked towards her.

"Shawn?" She asked, looking up at me.

"Last time I checked." I smiled. She looked down and I saw her cheeks getting redder by the second.

"Oh my, is the Madison Brooks blushing?" I questioned.

"No," she said, looking up, "it's just cold outside."

"Anyway, I saw you having some trouble opening your locker." I chuckled.

"Yup, I can't get the damn thing to open."

"Oh, locker 309." I sighed.

"What's wrong with locker 309?"

"The last owner of this locker, was shoved in and nobody knew. Her dry blood jammed the lock because of how many attempts she tried to get out. It took three days to open it. When they opened the locker, she was already dead."

"Are you serious?" Madison questioned, putting her hand over her mouth in shock.

"...no."

"Shawn!" She squealed, slapping my arm real hard.

"Ouch," I chuckled, "you got an arm."

"Mind helping me open the haunted locker?"

"How did you know it's haunted?!"

"Quit it!"

We laughed and it took us a while to settle down.

"Okay, what's your combination?"

"It's-"

"Wait you actually trust me with your combination?"

"Yeah, why would I tell you if I didn't trust you?"

"I don't know..."

"Class is going to start soon, hurry up. My combination is 322408." She said, reading off of her paper.

"Okay, see, you have to twist it this way, and when there aren't any numbers left, you push the center and the lock will open."

"Thanks Shawn, what's your number? I'm kinda new here and we'll, you're my only friend."

"Oh, yeah, sure."

I unzipped my backpack and grabbed my phone unlock it and gave it to her to put her number in as she did the same. I put my phone back in my bag. Before I could zip up my backpack, it was smacked out of my hand by Joshua's legacy, none other than Nicholas Spencer.
