HERE WE GO

8:30pm

Tyler woke up suddenly. He rubbed his eyes and yawned, goosebumps rising on his skin as he quivered while stretching. Reaching over to grabbed his buzzing phone off the floor, with his eyes half closed and vision still blurry, he slid his thumb across the green answer button.

"Mm, hello?" He stretched again, groaning. Then his eyes snapped open all the way, realizing how awkward that must've sounded to who else was on the line.

"Tyler? Where the hell are you dude?" he sounded like he wanted to be annoyed, but he sounded kind of strained.

I love when my crush calls me dude, it makes me feel loved. Tyler thought, giggling to himself and scratching an itch on his arm. He thought about how he must look right now: slouched over the mass of blankets wrapped around him, hair all over the place, and eyes half closed. The image made him chuckle to himself.

"What are you laughing at?"

"What?" Tyler asked, slightly confused. "The party, Tyler! I've called you six times." Josh responded, agitated. "We've been waiting, and Debby's pissed."

Fuck Debby.

"Oh, right. The party...Jesus Christ, the party!" Tyler gasped, swiftly rolling off the side of his bed like a goddamn ninja and landing on his feet, rushing to the closet and swinging the door open. His mind was about to wander to the possibility of all the blankets being strewn across the room, but he was on a mission. He had to stay focused.

"I'm so sorry, I-I overslept. I'll be down in a minute." He said quickly. He didn't wait for Josh to hang up before pulling on his black skinnies and a light blue button up. He rolled the sleeves up and pulled on his vans, tying them as fast as humanly possible and checking himself in the bathroom. Good to go.

He was practically flying down the stairs, and didn't wait up for Kelly or Zack to stop him. Josh was in the car with Debby in the front seat, her face illuminated by her phone light. Meanwhile Josh looked slightly bored but lit up and grinned at Tyler over the steering wheel.

"Sorry I'm late. I overslept." Tyler apologized.

"30 minutes late." Debby snapped, not once lifting her gaze from her phone. "Joshy, I told you we shouldn't have brought him." She lowered her voice to try and whisper to Josh, but Tyler heard her. His face heated up with embarrassment and he dropped his gaze to his hands in his lap.

"Sorry if I'm intruding, I'll stay out of your way." Tyler muttered. He felt like a chastised child, not like the sixteen year old he was. He gritted his teeth to hold the tears back that threatened to spill, and didn't even lift his head when Josh spoke.

"Tyler is my friend, Debby. Don't talk to him like that." He snapped. Tyler could tell that Josh was just about done with that girl. "And who are you texting?" He asked, exasperated.

"None of your business."

"You've been on the phone since we've gotten in the car, texting nonstop. I think it's my business now."

"Are you my dad, or my boyfriend, Josh?"

"I'm not your dad, but I'm  starting to think I'm not your boyfriend either, Debby." He commented.

"You're seriously doing this right now?" She threw her hands up and looked at Josh.

Tyler felt like a third wheel; or perhaps the feeling you get when your friend's parents are arguing or yelling at your friend and you're left to awkwardly witness in the background.
