After wandering his neighborhood  and grabbing a bite to eat, Tyler lost track of time. By the time he arrived home, it was around ten thirty-ish.

The further he walked into his house that night, the more the joyous feeling in his soul was extinguished, and replaced with the irrefutable feeling of dread.

He couldn't deny the slight disappointment deep inside of him  towards his life, but at this moment in time, at least he knew that his foster mother and father wouldn't exactly care that he was coming home after dark, considering they would ask minimal questions and he could give them a vague response describing his interesting activities that afternoon.

He wasn't greeted with the pleasant smell of dinner cooking, or the TV blasting the latest kid's show (granted it was late). In fact, the place was as lifeless and cold as the first day he arrived, about 6 years ago. Tyler is 16 now. But this...this was nothing he wasn't already used to.

He tiptoed through the house and made sure to steer clear of the creaky parts of the floor near his foster parents' room, and slipped into his own.

Tyler did the regular routine where he changed out of his clothes and tossed them onto his desk, making a mental note to wash them out later since they probably reeked of weed. He flopped onto his bed before he remembered his dying phone, then groaned and got up again to plug it in, now just sitting on his bed with his elbows propped up on his knees, head in his hands.

Tyler's mind wandered to Josh. Josh's hands, Josh's face, Josh's arms- everything about him was a work of art and he wanted this boy all to himself. He was getting a bit aroused thinking about the topic of Josh, but who wouldn't? Just as he was going to go full on horny, he froze when he heard soft footsteps outside of his door.

A muffled knock came from the other side, and he got up to get it. He really hoped it wasn't Zack, the biological son of the family he lived with, since he wasn't the nicest person. Then again, he probably would've barged into his room and interrogated him until the entire family woke up to see what was going on.

Instead the cockblock at his door was their other son, seven year old Jay. Good thing he didnt pop a boner in front of the kid. Jay had always been his favourite. But Jay was the first to take a liking to Tyler, and the only one who seemed to genuinely enjoy Tyler's company. Then again, he was a kindergartener. But that didn't stop him from completely falling in love with the kid. He was about the only thing that Tyler looked forward to when he woke up every day.

Jay, and Josh.

Josh and Jay. That was cute.

Anyway,

Jay was half asleep, clad in ninja turtle pajamas, and rubbing his eyes. Upon seeing Tyler, he seemed more awake than he was a second ago, and his eyes lit up.

The small boy smiled and did that awkward whisper-yell thing to show his excitement-but quietly- and collapsed to hug Tyler's leg, in which he smiled down at him and brought Jay into his room, making sure to close the door.

"Tyler! Oh Tyler, you smell." Jay wrinkled his nose and climbed onto the older boy's bed.

"What do I smell like?" Tyler chuckled and laid on his back on his bed, as Jay rolled to his back as well and they stared up at the ceiling.

"Like...cigarettes, but not like cigarettes." Jay spoke with a slight lisp, due to his missing front teeth.

"Very descriptive of you, Jay. I love your observation skills."

The younger boy frowned but grinned, his rather large gap on display. "I should knock you out, smarty pants."

Tyler scoffed and put his hand to his chest, feigning hurt. "You wouldn't do that to your best friend, would you?" He gasped.

"Nah, you're my only friend. I won't knock you out for real." Jay spoke quietly.

Aw. His only friend. The kid was only seven, though. He'd have enough time to make friends of his own- Jay was cute, considerate, and funny. Who wouldn't want him as a friend?

"What are you doing up this late anyway?"

"I was thinking."

"About what?"

"Things."

"What kind of things?"

"Things, Ty."

This boy is too sassy for his own good. I don't need this.

"Well if you don't want to tell me I'm just gonna go to sleep-" Tyler teased,  rolling on his side with his back to Jay, pretending to sleep.

The sound of Jay's small voice muttering an urgent "Okay, okay"  was enough to get Tyler to turn around and face Jay once again.

"Okay so, I was in Maddie's room, with her toys, you know how I like playing with the barbies and the ninja turtles?"

Tyler nods, interested in what Jay was going to say next. Jay was a lot sharper than most relized, and he never liked the 'boys only play with boy toys' rule that his parents often made.

"Well, I found her dress-up stuff and I...I-" His voice cracked and he sighed, like you do before the waterworks start.

"Take your time, Jay. Don't get worked up."

"I tried her clothes on, Ty. And I liked it. But then Zack found me and I was wearing a Cinderella dress and he yelled at me and then Mommy yelled at me and Daddy was mad at me too." Jay hiccupped and began to cry, leaning into Tyler's chest.

Oh.

Tyler wasn't going to push Jay further, probably because they'd probably said things to him that even he wouldn't want to hear. "It's gonna be okay, bud. I won't let them punish you again for being who you are." He put an arm around Jay and pulled him closer, rubbing his back soothingly.

Tyler hated making promises he couldn't keep, but that seemed to calm the crying boy down. He felt obligated to protect Jay, to keep him safe from the nasty outside world, and he promised himself that he was going to do just that.

But how?
