Six: Bonfire
Daniel
After a few hours, the sun was almost setting and we were asked to pick tables. I asked Sophie about where she wanted to sit and she chose the one that wasn’t too crowded and only had one table to its left, and another table to its right.
The field was filled with pairs conversing, and also tables. We were asked to clear out, and this truck came bopping up to the middle to drop really huge pieces of wood. Later, when the sun was finally down, Sophie and I sat on our table. And guess what? Came onto the tables on our right and our left, were Jean and Jet with their partners. A moment later, Mr. Birch threw something in the pile of wood. It burst into flames a few seconds after. Wow. It was like the whole field lit up. So this was what they called the giant bonfire. Cool.
“It’s really beautiful,” I heard Sophie sigh. I looked at her and I couldn’t get the words out of my mouth.
She stared toward the fire, and her face glowed as it was accentuated by the light. Her eyes were bright and excited, and she wore a soft smile on her face. Her blond hair seemed as if they turned gold, and for that moment my crush on this girl was bursting inside my chest. I felt mortified though, when she caught me looking. She had this playful grin on her face.
“What?” she asked, looking directly into my eyes again.
“Nothing, you’re just… attractive.” What the fuck? Why did I say that? Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh. Now she might not ever speak to me again. Good going, Daniel.
I was nervous, I stared at Sophie and she just stared at me, until she bit her lip hard to keep from laughing. “Attractive? Are you—drunk?” she couldn’t help it anymore. She laughed. She actually laughed.
“No, I’m not. Believe me; you’re so… you’re on fire.” WHAT DID I SAY?
“You mean I’m hot, right?” she still grinned at me, and she was really, really, really trying not to laugh at everything I’m saying. Maybe I’m the freak. It’s just that she’s creating a mess out of my thoughts I couldn’t think straight!
“Y-yeah.” I stuttered. “You know what? I’ll get us some food,” I pointed to the food bar at the other end of the field, and Sophie was already laughing at me.
“Right. Good thinking,” she was still laughing at me as I walked backwards—
“Watch it, Cross!” I bumped onto Mr. Birch.
I heard Sophie’s twinkling laugh behind me, “Oh, sorry, sir,” I saluted at him with a tight lipped smile on my face and I ran to the ever so far food bar, in an attempt to hurry back to the hungry, laughing lady on my table.
Sophie
I still hadn’t gotten over Daniel’s strange comment about me being on fire. That really made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe. I’d never laughed this hard in a really long time. He’s so corny and dorky and sweet all at the same time. He even bumped into Mr. Birch. He doesn’t press me with so many questions, and I like that. He doesn’t invade my privacy; he managed to get us out of the tense atmosphere. And now he’s getting us some food to munch on in the night.
The bonfire was so beautiful, as always.
“You having fun, girl?” I was startled when I saw Jean infront of me, her palms down on the table. I counted three seconds ‘til Jet arrived.
