Buffy's birthday finally approached and though she dreaded being another year older, she didn't mind spending time with her friends and family. Just as the party began, she made her way down the stairs just as Spike was coming in through the front door.
"Happy birthday, Buffy." He noticed her necklace she was wearing. "I like your necklace." He smiled, he so badly wished he could pick her up and hug her in front of everyone.
"Thanks, so do I." She smiled and a few seconds later Riley came in behind Spike.
"Hey babe, happy birthday." He walked around Spike, wrapped his arms around Buffy and kissed her, seeing Riley and Buffy made Spike wonder if one day that could ever be him.
"Oh, wow- thanks." Buffy was thrown off by Riley's kiss. "Let's go see everyone." She avoided eye contact with Spike as she walked right past him. "It looks beautiful in here Willow, I love it."
Willow and Joyce had decorated the living room with lots of balloons and streamers, they chose white and black for the colours. Buffy noticed her mother didn't quite look her best, it dialled her mood back a few notches.
"Hey mom, place looks great." Buffy went and sat down next to her mom on the couch. "How are you feeling?"
"Oh Buffy, don't worry about me. I'm feeling fine." Joyce smiled, and pushed a piece of Buffy's hair behind her ear. "Go enjoy your party, you deserve it."
"I love you mom, really I do." Buffy felt the need to tell her mom she loved her more now that she was sick, in case anything were to happen.
After lots of dancing and party games, it was finally time for everyone to gather in the dining room for dinner. Joyce prepared a turkey for Buffy's birthdays dinner and Willow and Tara prepared sides. Buffy sat across the table from Spike, the two of them had found it extremely hard to avoid eye contact with one another, Riley seemed to pick up on the unusual behaviour between them.
"Everything's delicious, thank you guys." Buffy had finished her meal, along with everyone else. "I think at a traditional birthday party there is suppose to be gifts?" Buffy's smile was very cheery, she couldn't remember the last time she felt so happy.
"Let's all go to the living room, Anya and I will bring the cake in there." Willow was gathering dishes on the table.
Buffy grabbed the middle of the couch, she noticed Spike had excused himself to another room. "I'm going to run to the ladies room, excuse me." Buffy snuck upstairs behind Spike, no one seemed to notice except Riley.
Riley tried to tell himself it was a coincidence that his girlfriend and Spike happened to leave the room at the same time, so he tried to brush it off once again. Buffy however, locked herself in her bathroom with Spike.
"Are you enjoying your party?" He asked while leaning against the sink.
"I am." She admitted. "I wanted to tell you, that I plan on talking to Riley tonight.. After the party and all."
"Are you sure you want to do this on your birthday Buffy? I've waited a long time for you, a few more days is nothing." Spike didn't want Buffy to ruin her birthday.
"I'm not doing it for us, I'm doing it for him. He doesn't deserve being lied to any longer." Buffy went to open the door. "I want to give us a try, Spike.." Buffy thought about it for days, if she could show her friends and family that Spike and her aren't as weird as they might think, than she might have another chance at finding her soul mate after all.
