Chapter 4- Melina Shantel POV
Jo and I are the first to arrive to Mathematics. The teacher isn't in the chair yet either. I find a spot in the middle of the room, Jo follows suit. "I hope we get the good music to start off with in band today. I had already played what they gave us last year," Jo talks on and on, practically bragging about how she's always ahead of the class, especially on the tuba.
Small amounts of people pour into the class room and I notice a familiar person, a brown headed girl who has been everywhere. Miss I've-Been-To-Japan, Katy Hayes. I poke Jo in the side and tilt my head towards Katy. "That's her?" Jo asks. I shake my head in a nod.
Katy walks towards us, puts her bag down and sits in the desk next to me. "Hey Mel," Katy says. I notice one thing she's holding a large mouthpiece, a tuba mouthpiece. Looks like Jo may not be the only tuba player this year.
"Mel? Melina, why'd she call you that?" Jo asks, nit noticing the mouthpiece.
"She heard my mom call me it," I raise my attention to the teacher who just walked in.
------
After Geography, with Katy, I walk to the band room. I notice Katy following me, she probably doesn't know where the band room is. After band I'll get lunch, which I would love to be before. I carry my French horn with ease to my next class.
Once I enter the room and look at the seating chart. I'm, yet again, the only French horn player. Lucky me I sit by the two tubas, Katy and Jo, and the altos and tenor saxes. I sit down and start taking my instrument out of my case. I look over and see Katy getting the huge, loud, low instrument that's called a tuba. I see Jo doing the same. Jo sits down first.
"Hey Melina, who sitting there?" Jo points towards the empty seat. I nod towards Katy getting the tuba while I start warming up with scales. Jo plays a E flat. Right when I finish my fast scales Katy sits down.
"I knew you were a French horn," she says as she plays the fastest scales in a few seconds without a breath. I see Jo gasp. Our teacher shushes everyone.
After his speech he has Lacy Cordid pass out music. Jo raises her hand. "Yes, Jo. What would you like to say?" Mr. Motrin asks.
"Will I switch my instrument out throughout the day or different days?" She asks.
"I have different instruments for different songs for you. The song I passed out is actually for flute today. Got it?" Mr. Motrin speaks in a very dry voice.
Jo nods and starts to put the tuba away and put together her flute. We sit in the front row and Jo's at the end, so she can play any instrument.
------
All throughout band I notice that Katy doesn't sound like she has only played since 6th grade, like Jo. Jo seems to want to show off to her, she plays the flute perfectly, but Katy plays the Tuba beyond perfect. She sounds like some prodigy. After an hour of playing my lips hurt from all the buzzing. I pack up and help Jo with her multiple instruments. "So in half am hour you have to play some more?" I ask. She nods.
Chapter 4- Katy Hayes POV
After band, which was really easy, I have lunch. "I'm starving," I hear a gurl say, I think her name is Jo. She plays the flute, I think. I grab my lunch bag out of my backpack and find somewhere to sit, I notice that basically everyone goes up to the lunch line.
A few minutes in and it seems like everyone has a certain table, and I'm trying to put myself in a group. Goths? No. Girly girls? Definitely no. Geeks? Nope. I have no idea. I slink my head down and bury my face in my hair, and start to eat my gas station sandwich and bag of chips. I hear a couple of voices, girls I think.
"So what do you thinks in it?" One girl asks, I hear their voices near me, probably at a table nearby.
"Probably chicken intestines," a familiar voice notes. It sounds incredibly familiar, like...
"Mel?" I say out loud, not meaning to.
"Oh great. It's Little Miss To-Big-for-this-Town," the small, pink haired girl named Melina says. I decide to ignore, I mean I'm here for a year, why make friends? Especially with a priss of a girl named Mel. I go back to my sandwich, I really would rather have the disgusting lunch they are serving here. "Oh, now she's to big to talk," Melina adds.
"Melina," Jo whispers.
"What?" Melina doesn't seem to take the hint.
"Be nice. She's new," Jo says. She seems nice. I feel tears forming, "Hi, I'm Jo." She smiles and holds out a hand, I take it and shake. A nice hand shake, perfect for brass instruments. "Please excuse Melina. She told me about the first time she met you, I bet you didn't mean to hurt her," Jo slides her tray near me and her body joins it.
"Yeah, thanks," I wipe the tears from my eyes and smile.
-----
I've survived a whole day at Albroke High School, with multiple classes with Mel. I made a friend, Jo, and it turns out we ride the same bus. Jo is in a seat on my right, Mel is in a seat behind Jo, and we are all riding the bus. I laugh at a joke that Jo tells.
"So, Jo? You play the flute?" I ask her.
"Yep, and violin, guitar, tuba, trumpet ad soon the clarinet!" She says it a seemingly boasting way.
"Oh cool! I play the tuba, ever since I was in 3rd grade. I have trophies and stuff," I say. I notice Mel and Jo's mouth in a gasp. "What? Didn't you start to play in 3rd grade?"
"No," Mel says, Jo shakes her head. "We didn't even have band in 3rd grade."
