~ It's just another day in Paris, France other than the fact that it's the first day of 9th grade and there are some surprises in store for certain people :) ... ~
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I rolled around, still half asleep, as I pushed the alarm off button. It was 6:30 a.m. Huh, I thought. Just 5 more minutes, that's it, then I'll get up. I turn back around and drifted off to sleep again.
~~~
"Ava! Ava!! AVA!" said my mom, shaking me like whatever she wanted was an emergency. I jumped, surprised and cringe at the sudden yelling, and fall off of the nice, warm comfort of my bed and onto the cold, hard, floor of my bedroom.
My face was buried in my carpet and my body was bent and flipped into a very uncomfortable position.
"Ava?" my mom asked, hesitantly. I turned my head (very painfully) to look at my mom.
"Yes, my dear mother?" I asked.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes, of course, why wouldn't I be?"
I ask, trying to untangle myself. "I mean, it's not like I was SLEEPING when you nearly scared me to DEATH, which caused me to fall off of my bed! I'm TOTALLY FINE!" I say angrily."Oh, Ava, I'm so sorry!" she says. "But honestly, you're such a drama queen!"
"Well, I'm fine now," I say, rolling my eyes. "Y'know, I'd actually like to know WHY I almost died," I said, plopping down onto my comfy bed.
"Well, y'know," mom started. "It's 7:45 a.m.,"
I roll my eyes again. "So?""And it's the first day of high school for someone..."
My eyes widen.
"9th grade!" I say. "9TH GRADE! School! I'm gonna be late!"
I say, shaking my mom, with a tight grip on her shoulders. I started to freak out.
"MOM, WHY DIDN'T YOU WAKE ME UP EARLIER??"
I try to get out of my bed, but I was in such a rush that while I was getting out, I tripped over the edge, which, strangely enough, brought me back to my previous position on the floor. I scrambled up, trying to ignore the pain shooting through my body.
"I'm fine! Really!" I say to mom, who had a you should be more careful, look on her face. Satisfied, she left me in my room to change.
I never should have overslept! I thought, running into the bathroom.
After the quickest shower of my life, I dry my dark chestnut hair while, at the same time, choosing my outfit for the day.And now I don't know what to wear!
I've always had a problem with choosing outfits. My mom would always tell me that I should have no trouble picking an outfit, because of all of my clothes.
But no one really gets my taste of fashion. The only one who does, it seems, is me.I came down to a choice between the only two outfits that seemed right.
The first one was a white short-sleeved shirt with a pale blue skirt with dark blue paw prints along the side.
The second one was a pair of shorts with an aqua top that fit perfectly starting at the top, and was more loose towards the bottom. The trim at the bottom had a black dot, white dot pattern.
In the end I decided on the second outfit. I paired it with white flats that had a dark blue outline and sequins at the toe that I'd added on.
I looked into the mirror. "Perfect!" I said happily. I check the time. I only had 10 more minutes to get to school on time! I run downstairs and grab one of the croissants my mom had just finished baking.
I poured myself some juice and ate quickly. As I pick up my backpack I say, "I bet Collette's gonna be in my class again."
"Again? That's not possible!" says my mom.
Collette and I used to be friends. Maybe not best friends, but we were pretty close. That was before we even went to school. She was nice back then. Then, she changed and one minute she was all nice and friendly, and the second she was saying a bunch of selfish things and making fun of me. Since then, she acted as if she didn't even know me and made fun of me all year, and that continued through the next few years.
"You say that every year," I reply.
"Bye mom!" I say through a mouthful of my croissant.
"Bye sweetie!"
I have 5 more minutes. I live pretty close to the school so I've always walked there.
I stop by at the library to return a book. I have 3 minutes left, but the library is right next to the school so I'm not that worried. I look around the library for another book to read.
As I was about to leave the library, not having found a book, I saw that the back of the room was...glowing?
I looked around to ask someone, anyone, really, if they saw it too.
It was the first day of school, and most of the adults were talking time off at home, so no one else was in here but me and the librarian in the other side of the building.
I had 2 minutes left. If I just went to investigate for a minute and left immediately after, I could still make it on time.
School didn't actually start until 8:10, but you weren't allowed inside after 8:00. I went to see the source of the glowing.
Whatever was glowing, it was glowing a bright red, and every here and then it would stop.
I was now close enough to see that the glowing was coming from one of the books in a dusty old bookshelf way in the back that no one really got books from anymore.
I was now about 3 feet away from the bookshelf. The glowing had gotten brighter, if that's even possible, and it had stopped flashing on and off. I took a step toward the bookshelf. The bookshelf started to shake slightly.
But how...? I thought. I took another step closer to the bookshelf and it shook more.
And with one more step, the bookshelf was shaking like crazy. Old books that were in it were falling out. I looked around, making sure no one was around. I mean, what if the blame fell on me for this mess?
Well, since the bookshelf was shaking harder as I got closer, I guess it was kind of my fault. I was now standing in front of the bookshelf, dodging the falling books. I searched for the source of the glowing.
I held my hands up to prevent a book from falling on my head. The bookshelf was shaking as hard as ever, now. I examined the book in my hands.It was old, and dusty. I don't think anyone read any of these books in a long time. I couldn't make out the title - it was as if it was in a different language. I put down the book and continued to look for where the glowing was coming from. I pushed back a few books and gasped.
At that moment, I forgot that I had school to go to, that I was going to be late, that there was a huge mess of dusty old books that I had to clean up. I forgot that I was in the library, forgot no one else was around.
All that I did, was stare at the glowing object in awe.
