"I forgot about my birthday."

"I know."

"Oh."

And we're back into silence. I turn my head to stare out the window, watching the other cars pass. I've tried at least three times to start a conversation with him since we got into the car. And sure, my conversation starters weren't the best.

And sure, I don't blame him for not talking to me. It's not stopping me from trying desperately. I want to apologize. I really do. But at this point I'm thinking if I do it now it'll seem too - fake. I should have said it earlier. Better late than never? I turn to him again.

"I.. Ever thought about getting a dog?" Or maybe never is better. He actually looks at me with this one. He blinks a few times before looking back to the road.

"No."

"Yeah, me neither."

I notice he tries to fight it, but a grin appears on his face for just a second.

"You more of a cat person?" He asks and I stare at him in shock for a moment. This is the farthest we've gotten in a conversation. And what a shitty conversation to continue.

"I think having something depend on me is a bad idea."

"Good point." He smiles a little to me. And it's enough to make me piss my pants from happiness. I have to keep this going.

"Are you?"

"More of a cat person? No. I'm allergic."

"I didn't know that."

"No need for you to know. We can't have pets at our place any way."

"We can't?" Rob's full of knowledge. He smiles a little more.

"Yeah, said so on the lease. That piece of paper you signed. You know that important document you were supposed to read over."

"That was like a year ago. I just forgot."

"It was more than a year ago. About 3 month more than a year."

"See? I'm sure I... Rob?"

"Yeah?"

"Didn't we sign a year lease?"

"Oh, you do remember then."

"So wouldn't the lease be up?"

"Not if it was signed for another year."

"Oh, yeah. So we're good for... Rob?"

"Yeah?"

"I don't remember signing another lease."

"That's because you didn't."

"I'm not on the lease anymore, am I?"

"Nope."

This time I'm more than happy to let the conversation end. I could be upset. But I really doubt I'd win that argument, considering I can't think of a reason I should know. Other than I fucking live there. He could kick me out and I could do nothing about it. Then again I think he could have done that when I was on the lease.

But what's really bothering me has nothing to do with the lease. Rob's allergic to cats and I didn't know.

How can I not know my best friend can't be around cats?

Cats.

What if I would have brought one home or something. Or maybe took him somewhere where cats were. He would end up sneezing and his eyes would water and be all itchy and shit. He'd be miserable because of me.
