CHAPTER TWO

"Can't I stay here?"

Jamie pleads. I shake my head almost immediately. I hate having to do this but I can't – won't have a wolf living under my – well, grandma's roof. But it was a miracle how I could recognize the wolves at first sight and yet, Jamie, who stood so close to me, couldn't figure out that I'm a demon, her natural enemy.

Not that I would harm her, of course.

I didn't need nor did I come here to start fights. Though I would love to have a word with her Alpha, who has no clue as to who I am, I needed to find a way to talk to him without being pinned to a wall with wolves baring their canines at me. Befriending Jamie would be a good as I could speed up the process, but I was unsure if she would remain quiet once she found out what I am.

"Please?" Says Jamie. "I'm sure you have a perfectly good house to get back to Jamie," I say. She rolls her eyes. "Drop the act, Lexa. I know you know that I'm a wolf." She says. I wait for a minute before speaking cautiously, "How did you...?" She rolls her eyes again. "Your grandmother, how else? She works for us and obviously; it would be stupid to think she kept that information a secret from you. You are her granddaughter, after all." Jamie says.

"And besides, Pilot Hill is a small town. There are very few people who are unaware of us werewolves." Jamie continues. I nod, attempting a smile. She waits for an answer – any sort of reply. "You should go. Since you're all better now. Your pack will be searching for you." I say. Jamie snorts, gritting her teeth. "Lexa, plea-" I step back, cutting her off. "I don't want wolves showing up at my doorstep. I'm not particularly fond of your kind. Please leave." She swallows, slowly nodding in response.

I don't say 'goodbye' nor do I walk her out. She's disappointed, I'm sure.

When she's gone, I pick up my bag and head for the shop.

No doubt, grandma's pissed off.

Her answers come in either nods or chilling glances. I press my lips as we leave the shop. It was quite late when I got there and grandma had already finished taking the orders so here we were, walking home. We were a second away from the house when I spotted a familiar figure in the distance.

"You go home first, I have something I need to do," I say to grandma. She doesn't say much and simply nods before heading home. I wait for her to get inside the house before running towards Jamie who slumped against the bench. She seemed to be muttering something incoherent.

"Hey." I sat next to her. She didn't say anything, just turned her eyes away and shifted her body to the other side. I nodded to myself and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Jamie, hey." No reply. "Why are you here?" I questioned. "Why do you care? Go home." Comes her curt reply. "Well, it's quite cold and you seem to be shivering a bit, so..." I say in return. "Why would you care if I shiver or die?" She says, voice devoid of any emotion. I wait for a second before saying anything.

"Look, I'm not interested in fighting or anything, so just go home, okay?" I say, fingers tightening on her shoulder. She shrugs my hand off, "I don't have a home to go back to, okay!" I freeze. "I don't have a packed house, I don't have a pack, I don't have a family – at least not anymore – I don't have money, nor do I have food...all I have is this stupid, cold bench where I can all but freeze to death." She says and I see a tear rolling down her pale cheek.
