13.
When she woke up, she was at home. The smell of soup caused her nose to make involuntary sniffing noises as she took in the smell. It felt like... like her mother was cooking for her. Like the many times she had gotten sick and the many times her mother put hot soup on the stove to nurse her back to health.
Xia-Mei smiled, her eyes closed, she wanted to live this way, feel this way a little longer. Her mother was here. Her mother was here.
But she wasn't. And that was confirmed when she sat up to see, to prove only the impossible.
"Are you awake?" The voice of no other than Luhan spoke from the other side of the room. Xia-Mei refused to open her eyes as she laid down again.
A random thought then occurred to her. Had Luhan...seen her face?
She was quick to check her hair was covering her face and the ugly scar and it was.
She sighed in relief before remembering she was supposed to be pretending to be asleep. She quickly fell back onto the couch.
"I saw you sit up you know. I know you're awake." Luhans voice teased from across the room. They were silent for a while, while she silently begged, willed him to leave her home leave her be in her mind.
"I didn't see your face." Luhan whispered, his voice closer this time. "I dabbed the wet cloth on your face with my head turned." He explained and looked away again when she sat up and looked in his direction.
"Th-thank you." The words were short and chipped on her tongue but she had to say it.
Luhan beamed at her. "Your welcome!" He smiled and returned to the stove, his back to her. He didn't press her for more information like she thought he would. He didn't ask the questions most people would.
What's wrong with you?
Are you okay?
Do you need help?
She didn't want pity. She despised it and Luhan was showing none of it as he behaved like a busy parent in her kitchen, humming to himself as he twirled and searched through her cupboards, adding seasoning to the soup.
She had to admit it made her happy. Feeling this way. Being cared for. And maybe Luhan was being genuine. Maybe she had mistaken him wrongly. She smiled to herself as she watched him hum and dance in the kitchen to nothing.
This boy was different.
-
Luhan could feel her eyes on him as he worked in the kitchen. He didn't want to have to turn around to make her feel awkward so he happily worked with his back to her, adding the few odd dance moves to try make her giggle.
He danced so stupidly, he almost laughed at himself. Flailing his arms around and occasionally shaking his buttocks more than needed.
He heard a sound that made him stop. Stop dancing and stop breathing altogether.
Behind him, he heard the musical noise of Xia-Mei..laughing. It was a small laugh but it was enough to make Luhans heart swell with happiness. She was laughing! He had actually made her laugh! He congratulated himself numerous times before turning to her.
"Hah! I heard that!" He pointed a finger at her, a mischievous look on his face.
"Heard what?" She choked out. Oh so she was playing dumb, Luhan laughed in his head.
He approached her on the couch, walking in the most flamboyant manner ever. His arm was on his hip as he swayed to her with his hips moving before he did. His head held high like some sort of royal, he approached the couch.
It wasn't long before Xia-Mei started laughing again.
"You-you-" she choked as she laughed. Luhan stopped for a moment, mesmerised by her musical laugh. He wanted to hear it everyday. Have it ring constantly in his ears. Her laugh was beautiful. She was beautiful.
-
Xia-Mei couldn't hold it in. He looked so... so... funny! And funny wasn't something she saw everyday. She burst out laughing when she couldn't contain herself much longer.
Luhan made her feel so.. so.. normal?
She was beginning to love it.
-
After a episode of Luhan making Xia-Mei laugh ended, oh and the soup almost burnt. Luhan pelted across the room and pulled the steaming soup off her fire stove.
He poured it into two bowls and left his on the counter while he walked Xia-Mei's to her.
The moment the soup touched the small table infront of her, Luhan noticed her tense up.
"I can feed myself!" She shrieked as she looked between the bowl on the table and Luhan crouched down beside it.
Luhan had a feeling she'd feel this way so he threw her a lazy flamboyant smile. The act was back on as he stood up and took up his very unmanly pose again, hand on hip and head turned upward.
"Oh no honey!" He spoke two octaves higher, making himself sound like a complete fool. "Oh dear darling, no!" He threw her a wink. "I've got my food waiting over there for me!" He giggled in high pitch and pointed lazily at the counter. "You eat up sweetbuns and I'll scoot my cute little ass over there to eat." His voice was so high pitched he thought he'd break glass, just by speaking.
It had worked though, from a tiny crack in her hair, Luhan caught sight of Xia-Mei's smile and this was enough to rally him on as he swayed to the other side of the room.
-
Once his back was turned, Xia-Mei fell into fits of uncontrollable silent laughter.
This boy really made her the happiest she'd been in a long time. Looking around her usually dark home, she smiled sadly to herself. The lights were never on when she got home. She'd always g straight to bed after eating bits of plain bread. Her eyes rested on Luhan across the room. She almost choked with laughter when he saw him stood in the most awkward eating position ever. Staying true to his unmanly act, his butt was extended out as he bent over the counter. She covered her mouth and fits of what she hoped was silent giggles took her over.
Luhan looked at her and threw her a wide smile, pointing at the food on the small table infront of her.
"Eat up, darlin'!" He mimed eating, his voice still as high pitched as ever.
Xia-Mei looked away and shook her head, smiling to herself.
Luhan made her house a home. She'd never laughed this much on her life. And she decided to embrace him as as a way of saying thank you for making her feel human. Feel wanted. She'd stop blocking him out as harshly as she had done so.
