spell; knocks out opponent

THE NEXT DAY, WHEN EVELINA SAW TOM, SHE was trembling with fury. Arden had let her use legilimency on her that morning and what happened was all his fault. She did suppose that indirectly he had also been the cause of a great day full of fun, but it didn't matter. He'd hurt her severely, and then simply walked away like nothing had happened. And now, as Blaire Holt's high pitched laugh rang through the air while Tom told her a joke, her anger took on a whole new level. She couldn't believe him.

As the final bell clanged, she turned back to professor Flitwick as he explained the importance of an amplifying charm.

"Sonorous is an essential in your palette of spells," He started. "It makes your voice loud and clear, like so." Casting the charm silently, he spoke. "Wake up, students!" Many heads bobbed up from where they were sleeping on their desk. "See, works like a charm." He added with a wink. The history begins..."

Evelina tuned him out; she already knew all of this. Instead, she spent her time shooting sharp glares at Tom's back. Today she'd gotten out of bed late, and he and Blaire had already taken her favourite spot. Front and centre. Not only that, but normally Arden and her would share a desk but today she was stuck with Phinneas, the kid known for cheating on exams. Every teacher knew to cast an anti-cheating spell on his quill as soon as he walked into the class, but somehow he always made it work.

An especially loud sigh escaped her, making heads turn in her direction. At least her seat at the back was coming to good use. She shrugged quickly and they turned back to the teacher, intent on pretending to pay attention.

"Who can cast the charm on themselves as an example?" Professor Flitwick asked. Evelina's hand shot up and he picked his glasses off of his nose. "Is that you Ms. Moreau? What in Merlin's name are you doing at the back of the class?"

"The class was full when I got here, Sir." She said.

"I'm sorry, I can't hear you!" He replied, eyes glimmering. She understood his unspoken command.

Placing a Sonorous quickly on her self, she repeated herself. "The class was full when I got here, Sir!"

Tom twisted back to look at her, and she knew that he was questioning how she'd done it so quickly and quietly.

"Very good, Ms. Moreau, especially the silent casting." Evelina nodded at the praise and lay her head on the table.

"What's wrong?" Phinneas inquired, seemingly sincere tone.

Evelina debated over what to tell him. Phinneas didn't have any friends, and who would believe a cheater anyways? "Tom. He hurt me yesterday and now he's acting like nothing..." She stopped when the class when quiet. "What?"

Phinneas laughed nervously. "I think you forgot to cast the counter charm."

Quickly, she did so and whispered for good measure. "Bloody hell. Everyone heard me, didn't they?"

"Yes, they did." He replied, wincing. "I honestly thought you were tired or something and I thought it'd be funny- I didn't think it was something like that..."

"Oh, just shut up Phinneas!" She said turning his skin green with a quick spell. "Now you look like a reverse carrot." Evelina gestured to his bright orange hair.

"Change it back, please!" He mumbled, curling in on himself.

"Fine," She replied, rolling her eyes and doing as told. She didn't want to get in trouble.

The heat of someone's eyes fell on her and she looked back to see Tom seething. His eyes had turned to flinty shards of ice, and his skin had never looked so stark against his raven hair.

All she could thing about for a moment was how handsome he was.

Snapping out of her trance, she returned the stink eye with equal fervour.

The rest of the class passed as Tom and Evelina traded glares. When the clock ticked to signal lunch time, she attempted to rush out of class.

"Wait for one minute, Ms. Moreau, Mr. Riddle. Headmaster Dippet would like to have a word with the two of you concerning the incident in class." Professor Flitwick's words stopped her in her tracks.

"Excuse me, Sir, but I think there's been a misunderstanding." Tom shot her a look of warning as he used his most charming tone on the teacher. "Me and Evelina have nothing to do with each other.

"I know that Tom, but the Mr. Dippet does not. A student reported the exchange to him and you both are required to go see him." Mr. Flitwick sighed.

"All right, if we must... Let's go, Tom!" Evelina murmured, an extra spring in her step as she thought of all the ways the headmaster would punish him. Surely he'd be suspended.

As they walked outside, Tom was silent in thought while paintings muttered in hushed tones. One stood to the side and watched us, her blue dress stunning against the ragged background.

Evelina spun back towards Tom and continued walking, not stopping to think about the lady.

   But maybe she should've.
