EVELINA COULDN'T HELP BUT THINK ABOUT how long it'd been since classes had actually been fun, her stomach somersaulting over and over as the events from a few nights ago played in the back of her mind.

As Tom shot a curious glance at her, she shook her head quietly at him. Evelina didn't want anyone to know; and she'd been careful not to mention it to anyone, including Arden. If anyone but the two knew, it would end up across the whole school by dusk.

She had the overwhelming urge to bring her fingers to her lips, but she knew she would never live down Tom's teasing if she did. He was slowly starting to warm up to her, and occasionally they studied together, their arms brushing the slightest bit as they turned the pages of thick books.

He slid in next to her as the teacher turned her back for a moment. "Hello."

"Hi." As much as she tried to stop her anxiety in it's tracks, her leg started to bump up and down uncontrollably, causing an irritable tap tap sound with her shoes.

"Are you, Evelina Moreau, nervous?" He joked, nudging her. He'd shown her a different side of him across the past few days, but there was something forced about it. His smile was always a little to wide, laugh too strong, expression too meaningful.

A hiss sounded in the class.

"Hey," She said, ignoring his words. "What was that?"

"What was what?" His eyebrow arched in curiosity. However, again, it was raised the tiniest bit too high to be real. Evelina knew from experience.

Another snake-like sound reverberated through the room, and she glanced around, trying to figure out if she was going insane.

"Are you sure you didn't hear that?" She asked worriedly. His lip twitched and she saw his forehead crinkle in thought. "And are you sure that you don't have anything to tell me?"

"N-no..." He stuttered. "Bloody hell."

"Oh my Merlin!" Evelina transformed her laugh into a cough, quickly hiding it in the crook of her elbow. "Did you, Tom Riddle, stutter?"

His eyes blazed with playful fire. "Maybe it's just because I get jittery around you."

"Oh, really?" Evelina replied. There was nothing else circling her mind, her train of thought has driven off it's rails. She couldn't speak.

"And it's apparent that I've made the greatest female wizard in Hogwarts silent."

"Oh, shut your mouth you git." She slapped his arm lightly, enjoying the way the firm muscle tensed under his smooth skin. It was lightly freckled with imperfections that just made him seem all the more handsome.

"Did you just call me a git?" He asked, cocking his head.

"Did you just call me the greatest female wizard in Hogwarts?" She shot back.

"Absolutely."

And Evelina Moreau, greatest female wizard in Hogwarts blushed. She blushed so hard that it spread up her face like a rash until she was as vermillion as the sunset outside.

A snicker escaped Tom's mouth and it was only then that she realised her fingers were still curled around his arm. She quickly took them off and pressed them to her mouth, looking back towards the board.

Next to her, Tom began tapping his pencil repeatedly against the wooden desks, making a quiet but annoying sound that made her want to cast a crucio on him.

Suddenly he stood up, motioning for her to do the same. "Ms, Evelina and I must have an urgent meeting as prefects because of an incident that has occurred. May we please go sit in the library?" He said, turning up his charm with a half-smirk.

"Of course you can, Tom. Just remember that the homework is pages 237 to 239. You too, Ms. Moreau." Professor Keeger replied, entranced.

"We'll be sure to complete it." He replied, already opening the door for her.

She walked out, silently laughing as he joined her. "I think Ms. Keeger is in like with you."

"She's married and don't forget, she must be at least sixty!" Tom replied indignantly, making a face.

"I wouldn't blame her..." Evelina said.

"And why is that?" He asked, face serious as he turned towards her.

"Come on, Tom. You dazzled her. It's not her fault." She defended without thinking.

"Do I dazzle you?" He inquired, curiously brushing his hand across his cheek.

"What do you think?" Evelina sighed. There was no point in denying it. Tom had the smarts, the looks, the charisma...

As they rounded the corner, Evelina gasped in horror, letting out a strangled sob. The scene before her was gory and terrified her to the bones, even with her experiences of violence.

Because, written in what looked like blood, was a message on the wall, and a body lying still before it.

Evelina took only a moment to read the words, but they stuck in her mind like they'd been taped there.

The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir beware.
