ROWENA SET HER TEACUP DOWN on a saucer silently.

"I'm having a child."

Evelina sat up straight, staring at her friend's face in disbelief. "What? With who?" She paused for a moment, then looked back to her, disappointed. "Tell me that it's not Salazar's."

"I-I can't deny that." Rowena said, bowing her head out of shame. "I know it's wrong... But Evelina, you have to understand!" She continued, brushing her long, dark hair back nervously.

She only shook her head, not wanting foul language to escape her mouth. The woman in front of her was knowledge's ruler, possibly the wisest person in the world, yet she couldn't even make the simple choice about a man.

Evelina touched her time turner, spinning it around her fingers.

Rowena noticed, visibly flinching. "No. You can't go now..." The last part came out in a whisper. "Please. I need you."

Evelina's face softened as she let go of her necklace, watching her friend crumple into tears.

For hours, they simply sat there, the sun traveling along the sky above them, Rowena's heaving sobs slowly coming to a halt as she dried her eyes.

Eventually, Evelina knew she had to go. Her frequent visits were already unraveling time itself, but she couldn't seem to stop. Rowena was the first real friend she'd had, and her presence was addicting.

Salazar was not only handsome, but he was notorious for his wrongdoings to women, time and time again. Rowena would end up regretting it, but for now, Evelina could only make sure that the child was safe, for Ro's sake.

They were quiet for a moment, just enjoying each other's presence. Rowena reached up and brushed her fingers across Evelina's necklace.

She sat up, her posture unusually imperfect. "Tell me more about your time turner!"

"Well, you know most of it... It's a family possession, one that my father gave me before he left for his permanent post in America. It's very important to me, since I probably won't see him until I graduate. But I suppose there's one more thing,"

Evelina leaned closer to Rowena for effect.

"Nothing." She laughed, looking at the surprised expression on her friend's face.

"Oh, come on Evelina... I know there's got to be something you haven't told me!" Rowena grumbled. In that moment, Evelina saw past her immature facade.

There was pain in her eyes, and she was just making it worse.

With a sigh, Evelina continued. "I've told you about the Ministry of Magic, right?"

Rowena nodded enthusiastically. "Of course! They're the regulators of your wizard world."

"Well, each time turner must be recorded in the Ministry and permission must be given to use it. I don't have that permission, and it's an unrecorded artefact. It's an illegal time turner."

"Does this mean our friendship is illegal?" Rowena asked.

"Technically, yes... But it doesn't mean anything less to me, I swear." Evelina pointed out.

Rowena's face dropped. "You can go back to your real friends now."

"For Merlin's sake, Rowena, you can't get mad just like that!"

"Who's Merlin?" She asked curiously. "You never told me about him!"

"I'm leaving." Evelina said, standing up. "All you ever want to do is learn! Stay in your own time, will you?"

As she walked away, the harsh word's she'd spoken registered in her mind, but she couldn't bring herself to turn back and apologise.

But she would never forgive herself if anything happened to the baby, it would be the line of two of Hogwart's founders, one of the most powerful people of it's generation. She would protect it with her life.

And so, in the split second that she twisted her time turner at just the right angle, she was back home, at Hogwarts, tucked carefully into her bed like nothing had happened. Slowly, she stood up, pressing her feet into the warm floorboards of the Hufflepuff dorms and wandered out.

She knew it was late, that she shouldn't be out and could get caught by a prefect at any moment, but there was something peaceful about the stilled corridors that drew her to them like a moth to a flame.

Suddenly, her thoughts lit up.

What if there was a descendant of Rowena and Salazar inside Hogwarts?

Although it was only a hunch, she could see it being likely. Although Salazar had been banned from the school after the chamber of secrets had been created, Evelina knew Ro. She would never let anyone take her child away from her. She was too smart for that.

The person had to be here.

But who could it be?
