On a gloomy, stormy day, Desert the Hedgehog walked through the park she usually enjoyed going to. She was getting wet and hadn't brought an umbrella with her. Suddenly, Desert saw the sky above her darken even more. She looked up to see a black and red umbrella covering her. She looked to her side to see her friend Shadow the Hedgehog holding the umbrella as he walked beside her.
"Shadow, what're you doing here?" She asked in surprise and curiosity. Shadow still sported his signature frown and looked at Desert. "I was on my way home after a tiresome mission. As I passed by here, I saw you. You were getting soaked so I thought I'd share my umbrella," he answered. Desert smiled. "Thanks, Shads," she said, blushing.
Desert had always had a crush on Shadow but was a bit too afraid to admit it. Desert cleared her throat after her blush vanished. "A tiresome mission, huh? Well then, how would you like to come over to my place?" She asked, smiling at Shadow. Silence filled the air and Desert became a bit annoyed of the fact that Shadow not answering her. "Yeah, I suppose I'll come and relax at your place," Shadow said, turning his head away from Desert. Why'd he turn his head while saying that? Desert asked herself. Unbeknownst to her, Shadow was blushing as he thought about hanging out with Desert.
After entering her house, Desert prepared some snacks for Shadow and herself. Together they watched some sports channels, listened to some rock music, and did other stuff they enjoyed doing together. "Wow, I didn't know hanging with you could be so fun," Desert said as she smirked at Shadow. Shadow smiled back. "Heh, same to you. Which I've been meaning to ask, would you wanna take a spin on the Dark Rider sometime?" Shadow asked. Desert smiled happily. She always admired Shadow's motorcycle, and now he was offering her a ride, which she couldn't resist.
"Ok, but you gotta let me drive. I've always wanted to drive one," Desert said as she lightly punched Shadow playfully in the arm. "Heh, no way! I'm driving. You can hold onto me and just ride along," he smirked. Desert rolled her eyes as she smiled and laughed a bit. "Ok, fine. You win. I'll sit on the back," she laughed.  "I always win," Shadow responded with a cocky smile.
--------------------------
Time seemed to move quickly as five weeks passed and Desert hadn't seen Shadow since he visited her house.  "He must have A LOT of things to do. I miss him," Desert said as she walked through the park, enjoying the view. "Oh well. I guess I'll have to wait when he's free in order to hang out with him. I wish the GUN commander would just give him a break already," Desert said to herself.
Seeing that the sky was blue, and there were many happy people at the park, Desert decided to sit on a bench. She crossed one leg over the other and leaned back with her arms resting over the back of the bench. The air was breezy as it evened out the warm weather, making the perfect temperature for the outdoors. Everything was great until two Mobians passed by. A small child walked with his mother as he looked over at Desert.
Desert was a red hedgehog with dark red eyes who mostly wore black clothing. She was a nice girl who was also considered a tough and funny tomboy. She was a really great girl but people judged too quickly of her. "Hey mom, is she that freaky chaotic girl everybody talks about? She looks scary," the small boy, who walked with his mother, asked. Desert, hearing the boy's words, became astonished, angry, and hurt at what she heard.
The mother looked over, seeing Desert's red eyes and expression. She quickly grabbed her child's hand. "Yes I believe so. Let's go Honey before she kills us all," the mother said, running off with her child. Desert sat on the bench in utter amazement. Her face stared emotionlessly at her shoes. Tears began to swell but Desert quickly wiped them away. "I'm tough! I don't need anyone to know how I feel," Desert said to herself, trying to be strong. Desert sighed and quickly got up, exiting the park.
The afternoon drifted into the evening and time seemed to move so slow after Desert's disappointing visit to the park. She laid on her bed and looked up to the ceiling. Recalling the boy's words, a single tear escaped her eye. Wiping at her face, Desert tried bottling up her feelings as she usually did, which caused her to be depressed. She hated showing her sadness and depression to others so she would sometimes force a smile.
Thoughts raced through Deserts head as she tried to occupy herself, which did not work. Suddenly, Desert's thoughts were interrupted when she heard knocking from downstairs. She raced down the stairs and looked out the peep hole. She gasped. Standing there was Shadow. "No, not him. I can't see him right now. I could usually show him some of my sad side, but...not this time," Desert whispered to herself. Knowing Shadow was waiting, she sighed and turned the knob.
"Hey, Shads!" She said, faking a smile. Shadow stared at Desert for a bit before handing her a helmet. "I had some free time and thought I'd give you that ride we talked about before. Before we go...are you ok?" Shadow said. Desert gulped and shook her head. "Nah I'm fine. Let's go," she responded, running over to Shadow's bike. Shadow also seated himself and placed his hands on the handlebars.
"Hold on tight," Shadow said I his monotone voice. Desert wrapped her arms around him. "I will. Where are we going anyways?" She asked. Shadow suddenly revved up his bike and sped off. "I'm not going to tell you. You'll have to find out," he simply answered. Desert became curious and intrigued but knew it was no use trying to get him to talk. She knew she would just have to wait and see where he was taking her.
"Follow me," Shadow said, getting off his bike. Immediately, Desert jumped to her feet and followed behind him. He led her up a slightly steep hill through a small thicket of trees. "We're are we going?" Desert asked curiously. Suddenly, Shadow gasped and grasped her hand. He ran up the hill, pulling her along. "We're going to miss it!" He mumbled under his breath. Finally, they reached the top. They stood atop a steeply sloped hill with bright green grass.
The steep hill overlooked the lake that was all the way on the other side of the park were Desert was earlier. A golden sunset reflected on top of the lake as it peeked half way over the horizon. "Sorry. I wanted to get here earlier to see the whole thing but I was held up on a mission before getting you," Shadow said disappointingly as he clenched his fists. Desert looked to him in surprise and amazement. Why was he doing this? She thought.
Genuinely smiling, Desert grabbed Shadow's hands in hers. "No, it's beautiful! I've never seen a sunset so pretty," she said, looking into his crimson eyes. Shadow looked to Desert in surprise then smiled. "I was hoping you would like it. It is beautiful...like a certain someone I know," Shadow said, looking into the sunset. Desert gasped. Many thoughts raced through her mind. She became a bit too curious, wondering who he could've been talking about. "Oh yeah? Who?" She said teasingly, trying to stay calm.
Shadow looked from the sunset to Desert's dark red eyes. "Desert, what do you think of yourself?" He asked. Suddenly, Desert became confused. "I saw it all. That boy and his mother...they called you a chaotic freak, right?  Well guess what...you're not. I gave those two a stern talking to, and I told them just how amazing you are," Shadow said then pausing. He looked harder and deeper into Desert's eyes, which caused her to blush. "What do you think of yourself? Do you believe that boy?" Shadow asked as his voice became slightly deeper.
"I-I don't know. I guess  so since everyone thinks of me like that," Desert answered. Suddenly, Shadow grabbed Desert's arms tightly. He looked at her with serious eyes. "No. You are NOT a chaotic freak! You are a beautiful, amazing girl who had done so much for others....for me," Shadow said seriously, now lightening his grip. His chest began to heave as excitement built up inside him. He looked away from Desert.
"Ever since Maria's death...you have always been there for me. You understand me and taught me how to relax and enjoy myself. You even brought happiness into my life that no other person now could do. You are my close friend, and I know you well. Those people are wrong. Just like they did me...they judge you to quickly," Shadow stated, shaking as he clenched his fists again.
Surprised at Shadow's actions and words, Desert felt a deep connection with Shadow and began to tear for the first time in front of her friend. "You're right. They did say that...and it HURTS! You are the only one who fully understands me and I thank you for that. You bring happiness to my life, too. It's the only thing that's keeping me from really falling into a deep depression," Desert cried aloud. She covered her face, not wanting Shadow to see her cry.
Suddenly, a pair of strong yet gentle arms pulled Desert close. Her head was placed onto a tuff of white fur and she cried into it. Shadow held her closely and placed his chin on Desert's head. "You can always come to me when you are depressed. I'll always be here for you because...I love you," Shadow said softly as he held Desert closer. Desert's eyes shot open through her tears. Shadow's words warmed her heart and she didn't feel so alone anymore.
Shadow pulled back, as did Desert. Shadow wiped the tears from Desert's eyes and looked deeply into them. "I love you too," Desert said softly, looking back into Shadow's eyes. Shadow smiled and decided it was time. "Would you like to be my girlfriend?" He asked. Desert nodded as she smiled happily. "Yes!" She answered.
Smiling happily, Shadow slowly leaned in closer. He placed his right hand behind Desert's back as he placed his other hand on her face, cupping her cheek. He pulled in closer. Finally, Shadow's warm and soft lips locked with Desert's. Deepening the kiss gradually, Shadow added a bit of pressure to the kiss. Desert kissed Shadow back, trying to match the amount of pressure he applied.
After about a minute more, Shadow and Desert pulled back for air. "You're a great kisser," Shadow whispered softly into Desert's ear. "You too," she responded happily. "I hope I made your day better," Shadow said, looking away. Suddenly, Desert grabbed Shadow's head and kissed him passionately. "Shadow, you made EVERYTHING better than it has ever been," Desert said. Shadow smiled happily and pulled Desert back into a hug.
For the rest of the night, Shadow and Desert watched the sunset as they cuddled on the grassy hill. Later after the sunset, Shadow rode Desert home. "Wait before you go," he said, holding a hand behind his back. Desert looked to him. "They're not as beautiful as you, but I bought you a bouquet of flowers," he said, pulling the bouquet out from behind his back. Desert blushed a deep red, matching her eyes. She took the bouquet in hand and kissed Shadow on the cheek. After saying goodbye, Desert went to her room and laid on her bed, for once feeling like the happiest girl alive.
