It was the day before the 4th of July, and Sonic was happily zipping around. Suddenly he stopped. "I've had my run, visited my buddy, beat Egghead once again, and  had a tough battle with Shadow. Which I had won," Sonic chuckled to himself. He looked up in thought to see what else he could do. Suddenly, Sonic thought of his crush. His cheeks instantly glowed a bright red. "I know! I'll ask her if she'd like to go get Chili dogs with me," he said, then running off.
Finally, he reached a nice looking house that stood out from the rest. He ran up to the door and rung the doorbell with a smile. After a minute or two, the doorknob started turning. Sonic's face lit up until he saw who stood at the door. Standing there was Shadow, who didn't look too happy. "What do you want?" He asked with a hard glare. Sonic bit his lip. He had told Shadow how he felt about his sister before, and Shadow wasn't so happy about that.
"Oh, hey, Shadow. I-I came to see if Flame was available so we could hang out," Sonic explained, gulping. He prepared himself for a beat down from Shadow.  Shadow sighed. He didn't feel like fighting a second time that day. He sighed again and walked back into the house. Sonic waited patiently, hoping Shadow was getting Flame for him. He waited for good five minutes. Sonic sighed and was about to leave. His ears flattened to his head as he turned around.
Suddenly, Sonic's ears perked up and twitched as he heard yelling from upstairs. Though he knew it was trespassing, Sonic bolted up the stairs. "Flame, are you ok?" He called out, checking each room. He opened the second door to his right. He saw that Shadow had a tight grip on Flame's wrist as she growled at him. "What are you doing, coming in our house like that!?" Shadow growled angrily. While Shadow was distracted, Flame ripped her wrist out of Shadow's grip. She ran over to Sonic's side, placing a protective arm in front of him.
Shadow growled and held up his fists. "Don't you dare touch him! Man, you're so protective, it's sickening! Yes, it's good that you want me to be safe, but c'mon, Sonic isn't harmful to me! You do this all the time!" Flame snapped. Shadow clenched his teeth. "The Faker can be with his carelessness! If he jumps into action with you without thinking, you could get hurt!" Shadow said, trying his best to contain himself. Flame began sweating, knowing how powerful her brother was. "J-just give him a chance to be around me. We are friends and t-that's all," she said.
Shadow closed his eyes. Three minutes passed with awkward silence. Finally Shadow backed down. He stood up straight and crossed his arms. "Hmph! Fine, but if he hurts you, makes you feel uncomfortable, or makes you do things you don't want to do, he'll regret it and I will not hold back!" Shadow warned. Sonic and Flame exchanged looks and immediately looked away then nodded. They didn't know that they liked each other, but Shadow knew. They looked at Shadow as he grumbled and left.
"Sorry about him," Flame said, rolling her eyes, blushing a bit. Sonic smiled. "It's cool! I know how Shadow can be. So, I came here to ask, do you want to go out for some chili dogs or something?" Sonic asked, blushing slightly though it wasn't noticeable. Flame nods. "Sounds like fun!" She said, patting Sonic on the shoulder. Sonic smiled then started walking with Flame. Eventually, they made it to the restaurant. They both grabbed their wallets. "I'll pay," they said at the same time. They began laughing a bit. "No, I insist! Go find a place to sit and I'll meet ya there," Sonic said. Flame nodded and began searching for a seat.
Finally, they finished  their time at the restaurant, and walked outside. "Thanks, Sonic," Flame said as she tried hiding her blush. Sonic chuckled. "No problem! Would you like me to walk you home?" He asked. Before Flame could answer, a black hedgehog stops in front of them. "I'll be taking her home. It's getting late, so beat it!" Shadow said, glaring at Sonic. Sonic turned around, not wanting to cause another fight. "See ya, Flame!" He said, then raced off. Flame waved happily until she turned back around.
"Shadow, I hate your attitude towards him. Please, just give him a chance. You know how badly I want to tell him how I feel but your stopping me from doing so!" Flame said. Shadow stayed silent and continued walking. Flame sighed and looked hard at Shadow. She mumbled to herself. "I vow that one of these days I'm telling him, whether you like it or not," she said. Shadow didn't hear her and kept walking forward.
The next day, on the 4th of July, which was Flame's birthday, Flame was becoming impatient. "I'm telling him now!" She said loudly, sitting up fast in her bed. She marched downstairs confidently. "Where are you going?" Shadow asked, passing through rooms. "I'm going Shadow! Going to tell him how I feel," she answered happily. Shadow dropped his glass of water and stared at her dumbfounded. "No you can't! I won't-," he objected, being cut off by Flame closing the door. Flame ran happily down the street, hoping to see Sonic running around. Suddenly, Silver the Hedgehog came into view as he walked down the street. "Hey, have you seen Sonic around?" Flame asked. Silver nodded then pointed down the street. "He's at the park, picking flowers with Cream. He's babysitting her today," Silver answered.
Flame beamed a smile then leaned in closer to Silver. "I need a guy's advice. Do you think I have a good chance of positive feedback from Sonic if I tell him I-I...love him?" She whispered as she blushed. Silver gasps and smiles. "Go for it!" He simply said then winked at her. He immediately ran off. He knew that Sonic liked her back. Flame watched Silver run away, a little curious as to why he did so. She shrugged it off and continued on her way.
Finally, Flame made it to the park. She spoke to herself, rehearsing what she would say. Little did she know, someone had heard her doing so. A hand touched her shoulder, causing her to turn around. Standing there was Sally Acorn and some of her female friends. "Hey, Flame, where do you think you're going? You're not thinking of seeing Sonic are you?" Sally asks cheekily with a slight sarcastic chuckle. Her friends laugh along. Flame nodded. "I am going to see him. Today is the day I tell him how I feel," Flame said, blushing brightly. Suddenly, Sally scowled then scoffed. She leaned her face in closer with her hands on her hips.
"You think you can win Sonic's heart? Heh! Not a chance, hon! You see, I happen to like him myself. I am a princess and I have so many likable things about myself. I know Sonic would choose me over a freak such as you any day. Face it, you have no chance!" Sally laughs amusingly. Flame's cheerful and happy smile drops. "W-what? I-I do so! Just because you're a princess doesn't mean everyone likes you! Plus Silver thinks I got a chance with him," Flame snapped, flustered.
Sally clicked her fingers in Flame's face. "Wake up, dear! No one likes Silver just as much as they don't like you! Oh wait, I think I like him a lot more than you. You're just a little sissy who hides in her brother's shadow who can't take care of herself!" Sally laughed. Her friends do as well. "I can so fend for myself! Wanna see me use my skills on you!?" Flame exclaimed. The group of girls continue to ridicule her and call her names, even pushing her back. She couldn't fight now, the words hurt to much to even be strong enough to fight. "Oh, what a baby!" Sally laughs.
Flames blurts out in tears and runs off. "Well, that shattered her confidence. Our work is done here! I think I better go win my man before she tries to again," Sally says about to turn around. "Not a chance, Sal!" An angry voice says from behind. Standing behind her is Sonic. He clenched his fists and had serious eyes. "What is wrong with you? You go and do that to her just because you like me!? Talk about childish, and you were the one who asked me where my brain was when they "handed them out". I could say the same for you! Don't ever do that again!" Sonic scolds her. He then races off, wanting to say more, but is too worried about Flame.
The front door swung open and Flame ran inside. She slammed it shut and fell to her knees. She sobbed hard Into her hands. Suddenly, Shadow came running to her. "What's wrong? Who did this? Was it that Faker!?" He asked, trying to look at her face but Flame covered it. She sobbed hard, unable to tell him. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Shadow scooted on by Flame and whipped open the door. Standing there was Sonic. Before he could say anything, Shadow pinned him to the ground, ready to pummel him to a pulp!
"Shadow, stop! It wasn't me! It was Sal. Please, just let me explain!" Sonic pleaded. Sonic explained the situation and Shadow lifted him up. "Alright, Faker, where is she!?" He asked. "In the park but-," Sonic tried stopping Shadow but he raced off towards the park. Sonic sighed then looked at the doorway but Flame had run away to her room. She pounded her pillow, threw it to the wall and cried on her bed. She had forgotten to lock the door, making it easy for Sonic to enter.
He peered in and came in to her. He sat her up and sat next to her, hugging her but Flame pulled away. "Go away! Why are you here?" She sobs. Sonic comes closer. "I came because I care about you! I saw everything with Sal and I confronted her. I came to make sure you were alright. Everything she said was not true, trust me on that," Sonic said, hugging her. Flame gasped! She stood up, pulling from his arms. "Y-you saw everything?" She asked in utter shock.
Flame, though it was unlike her, quickly fled from Sonic. She ran back outside, trying to avoid the embarrassment and rejection she might face. She raced back to the park to try and find Shadow for comfort but she couldn't find him. She stood alone and sobbed. "Flame!" Sonic called, reaching her. He placed his hands on her shoulders. "Just listen to me. Yes I saw everything, and I heard that you like me, but that doesn't change anything!" He said. He pulled her in, letting her rest her head on his chest. He rubbed her back and gently brushed his hand through her long quills and through her fur.
"Yeah, but wouldn't you like her over me? She a princess, everyone thinks she's prettier and so much more," Flame sniffed. Sonic hugged her tighter. "That's what everyone else thinks, but not what I think. You wanna know who's the prettiest, the smartest, and the coolest is?" Sonic said. He pulled back to look into Flame's eyes. She looks back as Sonic wipes tears from her eyes. He leans close to her ear. "You, Flame. You are all those things and so much more. I...love you," he whispered.
Flame's ears perk up. "You really mean that?" She asks while a blush invades her cheeks. Sonic nods. "Yes, I always have. I've been too afraid to admit it though. Mostly because Shadow would kill me and I didn't know how you felt about me," he said, rubbing the back of his head. Flame stands tall and wiped away the remaining tears. "I l-love you, too. I always have. I'm glad to know that you feel the same and that what Sally had said wasn't true," she said. Sonic smiles.
Sonic came closer, taking Flame's hand. "Of course! None of the things she said were true so you don't have to worry about her. Now, I'm going to make you smile. It's your birthday and I want to make you feel better," Sonic said. He came in closer and pecked her cheek. "Go get changed and meet me here around ten o'clock, ok?" Sonic asked, winking. With a blush, Flame nodded and headed off. Sonic watched her go then left himself.
Later that night, Flame met with Sonic. He had set up something special for her. They sat down on a bench together under the dark, night sky. "So why did you want to meet here at this time?" Flame asked. Sonic chuckled and grabbed her hand. "Have you forgotten what today is?not just your birthday but also the 4th of July. That means we get to enjoy seeing the fireworks!" He said happily. Flame's face opened in surprise. She did forget after having such a crazy day.
Sonic turned his head and looked to the sky as a blue flare rocketed into the sky, starting the show of lights. Flame laid her head on Sonic's shoulder as they watched. Close to the end, things began changing. Sonic chuckled a bit and lifted Flame into his lap. She blushed madly. He wrapped his arms around her stomach and rested his chin on her shoulder. "Here comes the surprise," Sonic said, pointing to the sky.  In the distance, waiting for fireworks to fire, Silver stood tall with a smile as he readied his psychokinesis.
Flame stared to the sky and saw a red flare go up. As the firework erupted into streams of lights, Silver shaped the lights into words. It read, "Flame, will you", then another set fired. A green flare erupted then formed into "be my", Flame gasped as she could only imagine the last word. Suddenly, two flares, one blue and one red, erupted. In capital letters, the lights form into the word "GIRLFRIEND?"
Flame looked in awe then felt Sonic nuzzle into her neck. "What do you say, Flame?" He asked softly. Flame turned her body to face him. A deep red filled her cheeks. "Yes! I would love to!" She said happily. In the distance, Shadow watched them but his expression wasn't angry. He looked happy and impressed! "You're ok, Faker," he said to himself in regards to Sonic.
Sonic smiled back and held Flame sideways across his lap and looked into her eyes. "Happy birthday, Flame!" He said, leaning in, giving her a passionate kiss under the fireworks.
