Riley Matthews.
I moved my dinner around with my fork as my mom and dad chatted about work. They snapped me out of my dream world when my mother asked me the very basic question: how was school today?
"It was boring, I hate school." I said tiredly. Yesterday was the Halloween party and I was exhausted. My mother and father exchanged wierd looks.
"Sweetie, You love school!" Her expression was confused. I exhaled and set my fork down.
"I used to." I spoke only the truth. School was decent when I was 'popular' now I'm known as a nothing and it couldn't be worse.
"Oh..." She pursed her lips "well what's going on in your life?"
"I was asked out on a date." I said and my dad had a scowl on his face. My mom simply smiled.
"By who?" My parents said in sync. My dad was more angry and fearful, my mom was proud and happy. But I used to go on dates almost every week when I was popular.
"Farkle Minkus." I said quietly while looking at my food. My dad didn't get even more angry, he actually became happy once again. But why? "Why is that a relief?"
"Well Riley, you usually go out with scumbags and I think this is the first time a nice guy asked you out." My dad said before eating a fork full of his dinner. He was kind of right but I can't let him know that or else he will have an ego.
Farkle Minkus.
Sitting at my dinner table was actually a living hell, 3 younger siblings and two stressed out parents. My brother Leo was playing with his food, my sister Grace was playing dolls at the table, and my baby sister Polly was flinging her baby food all over the place.
My parents just sat there saying "don't do that!" Or "do you need a time out?" I had so many things going through my head. I just wanted to be asked how my day was or how I'm doing, but obviously I can't have that. The loudness that was coming from our table made me want to pull my hair out.
I quickly stood up slamming my fists on the table. Everybody shut up and I grabbed my plate and fork. My mom gave me a confused look before saying "where are you going?"
"I'm going to eat outside." I said walking towards the front door. She stood up and walked in front of me.
"But honey it's freezing outside." She stood in front of me blocking my way.
"I'd rather die from being freezing cold than sit with this family." I said and left my moms jaw hanging. I walked outside and shut the door behind me. I finished my dinner in the cold then ten minutes later came back inside to see my mom washing dishes and my dad sitting at the table reading a book.
My siblings were all tucked into bed. My moms head snapped into my direction, she gave a half smile then turned back to her dishes. I walked over and washed my dish myself then put it away.
"Can we talk about what happened?" My mother asked while taking a seat at the table. I nodded and sat down
"I was just annoyed with them." I said referring to my siblings. She shook her head disagreeing.
"That's not it." Mom said in a sad tone.
"What?" I replied. Her face was sad and I didn't like that. My mom always puts on a happy smile but now it's gone I feel awful.
"Your angry with us..." She reached over and held my dads hand. I looked down at my hands and exhaled. "Just tell me what's going on."
"I'm mad that you sold our house, I'm mad that I never get asked how my day was or how my life is going! It sucks." I spilled my feelings and she nodded understandably.
"I'm sorry my baby." She set a hand on my shoulder and I looked up at her and smiled. My mom and I have always been close so it's weird when I don't talk to her that much. "What's happening in your life?"
"I asked Riley Matthews on a date." I said and a big smile appeared on her face. She always have helped me with my crush on Riley so this was a big moment.
"Farkle, I'm so proud! Great job." She brought me into a hug and I smiled.
I couldn't wait till tomorrow, the date will be wonderful.
