Sarah hung up the phone after she got finished talking with her uncle and then she very quickly put several pairs of clothes into her backpack. Once she was finished she slowly walked out of her room and saw Ian sitting in the living room. He was on the sofa with his head in his hands. He looked up as Sarah walked in.
“Sarah I have to talk to you,” he started. “I’m really sorry and I didn’t me—” he stopped as he saw that backpack on her shoulders.
“What’s that?” he asked. Sarah took a deep breath.
“I’m leaving,” she told him.
“What do you mean?”
“I called Uncle Roger. He’s going to take me home with him. And I’m going to live with him and Aunt Kay and Caitlin.” Ian stood up.
“I don’t understand. What are you talking about?”
“I don’t want to live here with you anymore Ian.”
“Sarah I made a really big mistake, but you don’t have to move out.”
“You lied to me,” Sarah said. “And you broke your promises. How can I trust you anymore?” Ian sighed.
“Sarah, please don’t do this. You can’t just leave.”
“Yes I can,” she said. “I’m sorry Ian but I don’t want to live her with you anymore. You should be happy. You can go back to your normal life before you let me come. You can have parties here and date girls and do whatever you want without having to worry about me anymore.” Ian shook his head.
“I don’t want any of that Sarah. I want you here. You need to be here with me.”
“I don’t want to live with you anymore,” Sarah repeated. She looked up as the doorbell rang.
“That’s Uncle Roger.” Sarah walked past Ian and opened the door.
“Hey sweetheart,” he said as he looked at her. “Are you ready to go?” Sarah looked back at Ian and then nodded.
Ian stared at the door as it closed behind Sarah as she left. He couldn’t do anything. He was too stunned.
Sarah walked down the steps with Roger and followed him over to his car. She put her bag in the trunk and then sat in the passenger’s seat beside of him. Roger looked over at her.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” he asked.
“Yes,” said Sarah. “I’m positive. I don’t want to live here anymore. I want to be with my real family.” Roger nodded and pulled out of the parking lot.
In his apartment, Ian sat down on the sofa and stared at the wall in front of him. He couldn’t believe that Sarah had left him. He ran his fingers through his hair and groaned. He knew that he had really fucked up but he didn’t think that Sarah would actually run away from him.
Sarah looked up as Roger pulled into a driveway.
“This is it,” he said. Sarah looked up at his house. She took a deep breath and then picked up her bag and followed her uncle inside.
Sarah looked around as Roger opened the door and she was immediately engulfed in a hug.
“Hey honey,” said her Aunt Kay. “Roger said you were going to be living with us now. Is that true?”
“Umm, yeah,” said Sarah quietly. “If you don’t mind.”
“Of course not dear. Caitlin is going to be so excited. I’m sure it will be just like a big sleepover for the two of you!” Sarah nodded and tried to match her aunt’s enthusiasm. She looked away as her older cousin came down the stairs.
“Hey Caitlin,” said Sarah. Caitlin looked Sarah up and down and gave a forced smile.
“Mom I’m going out with Dylan,” she said before she walked out the door without giving Sarah a second glance. Sarah sighed and turned back to her aunt and uncle.
“I’m kind of tired,” she said. “Do you mind if I just go upstairs and get settled in?”
“Of course not sweetheart,” said Roger. “Take all the time you need. Do you remember where the guest bedroom is?” Sarah nodded and walked upstairs. She walked into their spare bedroom and placed her bag on the bed.
Sarah sighed as she looked around. She couldn’t help but think of Ian and hope that she had made the right decision.
