Sarah stared up at the gorgeous girl standing in Ian’s living room. She really hoped that she hadn’t interrupted during a private moment.
“Who’s at the door Ash,” she heard Ian ask.
“You tell me,” said the girl whose name was apparently Ash. She turned around and looked at Ian. “What the hell are you thinking? She’s just a kid Ian!” Ian rolled his eyes at her and turned to Sarah.
“What are you doing here?” he asked her. “And why do you have a bag with you?” Sarah looked down at her feet. Ian sighed and led her into the living room. Sarah looked at the girl.
“Sarah this is my sister Ashley,” Ian told her. “Ash, this is the girl I was just telling you about, Sarah.” Ashley breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thank god!” she exclaimed. “I thought I was going to have to bail you out of jail for dating a twelve year old for a minute.”
“I’m thirteen,” Sarah spoke up. Ian and Ashley both chuckled.
“It’s really nice to meet you Sarah,” Ashley said.
“Same to you,” Sarah said as she shook her hand.
“Ok well now that that’s out of the way,” Ian said. “What are you doing here?” Sarah sighed.
“I got in a fight with Uncle Roger,” she mumbled. Ian sighed.
“So you packed up all your things and headed here?” Sarah nodded. “Sarah, you can’t keep doing this. You can’t keep switching back and forth between homes every time we make you mad.” Sarah looked down at the ground.
“I know,” she said. “I’m sorry.”
“I’m going to give you two some time alone,” said Ashley. Sarah watched as she walked down the hall into Ian’s bedroom.
“Why is your sister here?” Sarah asked. “I thought she lived in Florida.”
“Don’t change the subject Sarah,” Ian said. Sarah sighed. “I’m serious. This back and forth has to stop. And I think it would be best if you were living with your uncle.” Sarah looked up at him.
“Why?” she asked. Ian sighed.
“I made a really bad mistake,” he said. “And I should have never put you in the kind of situations that I have these past couple of months. Your aunt and uncle have a kid your age. They know what they’re doing. I don’t.” Sarah looked up at him.
“Ian,” she said. “I think that you did a really good job of taking care of me. Yeah you made some mistakes but in the past year I have lived in three different houses and this is the only one that I’ve ever considered to be a home.” Ian gave a soft smile.
“I promise Ian. No more jumping around to different houses. I want to stay here, with you. Please don’t send me back.” Ian sighed.
“I’m going to call your uncle and tell him that you’re spending the night here. I will discuss it with him tomorrow, ok?” Sarah nodded and gave Ian a tight hug.
“Thank you Ian,” she said.
“Unca E,” Sarah heard a little kid shout. She turned around and saw a toddler reaching up for Ian.
“Sorry,” said Ashley. “I tried to keep him in your room to give you two some privacy.”
“That’s alright,” said Ian as he scooped up the baby boy.
“Sarah, this is my nephew. His name is Bradyn.” Ashley smiled.
“My husband Darren is in town for a business meeting,” she explained to Sarah. “So I figured Bradyn and I would tag along so he could see his uncle.” Ian smiled and kissed the top of Bradyn’s head.
“You’ve missed your Uncle E, haven’t ya little buddy?” Bradyn giggled and snuggled into Ian’s chest. Sarah smiled as she watched the two of them. She didn’t understand why Ian thought he wasn’t good with kids.
“Are you staying with us tonight?” Ashley asked.
“Yup,” said Ian. He looked down at Sarah. “I haven’t touched your room. It’s all still the same.” Sarah smiled.
“Thank you,” she said as she headed down the hallway to put her bag down. She sat down on her bed and looked around. She had really missed living with Ian.
