(Jordan's POV)
I rushed into the living room with my bow in shooting position. Cameron followed. I was frantic.
"MELANIE!!!" I screamed and turned the corner of room shaking and holding my breath. It was one of "them"...Still on the floor. It's head had a huge hole where the bullet went through. I exhaled and leaped over the body and ran up the stairs to the attic. When I finally got up to the attic. A little body slammed into my legs. I let out a little scream.
"Jordan!" a little voice screamed.
"I'm so sorry Jordan! I had to. I'm so so so sorry." tears were streaming down her face and she started hiccuping. I wanted to cry too. I wiped the tears from her small face.
"No. It's ok Mels it's what you had to do. You did the right thing. I'm sorry you had to go through that. What happened? Where did it come from?"
"Well...I-I saw a bunny outside of the window of the attic. Oh Jordan I didn't think anything was going to happen." She sniffled. "I left the door open by accident. I g-guess while I was chasing after the bunny it came in. I saw it right when I came into the house. Then I...."
"Ok I know. You don't have to explain to me. NEVER do that again. Ever. I told you to stay hidden up there no matter what until I came back."
"I'm so sorry." she whispered.
I held her tiny body in my arms and patted down her short brown hair. When I thought she was calmed down enough I scooped her up into my arms, balancing her weight on my hip and carried her down the stairs where I found Cameron. I noticed he took the body outside. I looked down at the ground and mouthed the words thank you to him. He nodded.
"So...this is Melanie?" He smiled widely at her.
She dug her face into my shoulder. I let out a small laugh.
"Hey say hi. This is Cameron." She looked up at him and said a quick "Hi." and dug her face into my shoulder again.
"We are going to be going with him."
"What? Where?!?"
"When we get there, you'll see. There are other kids there." A gasp escaped her mouth.
"YAAAAYYY!" "I'll start packing." She ran up the stairs.
I sat beside Cameron on the dark green vintage couch in the corner of the room. I looked down at my hands.
"Sorry you had to see that. That's the first time that has ever happened. I could never bring her with me out there. I just-."
"Don't apologize. That's what happens when an 8 year old gets cooped up in an attic by herself for too long. They get curious. She doesn't know any better. I will make sure that never happens again. I promise. And if for some reason it has to. She will be prepared." he patted my leg and looked at me sympathetically. I melted a little.
"Thank you." I whispered.
I then picked myself off of the couch and started walking upstairs.
"I'm going to help her pack."
"Well. I'll be sitting right here when you come back." I gave him a weak smile and he returned the smile with a wink.
I was still shaking from before. I was so embarrassed. How could I let this happen to her? He must think I'm such an idiot for leaving her here by herself. I pushed the thought away quickly. What other choice did I have? I couldn't bring her with me out there. The attic was the only safe place there was for her until he came.
