-Chapter 1-

The dreaded first day of school. The clustered hallways, the hustle and bustle of students rushing around to find their friends and homeroom classes, the unrelenting cackling of the old PA system welcoming students and teachers back to Dune Ridge High School.

Dune Ridge High was the small town high school I was so privileged to attend as an incoming eleventh grader. When you live in a small, humble, close knit town, there is only one high school to attend, so subsequently, everyone will know each other. Unless, like in my case, you happened to move there during the last few weeks of summer break.

With a sigh, I dodged some chattering girls and sulked to the front office.

"May I help you?" A motherly figure spoke from behind the front desk. "I'm new here. My name is Grace." I answered quietly. "Grace Allen?" She rustled through the clustered files occupying the desk. "Yes ma'am" I answered politely.

I couldn't help but be shy, all the students at this school seemed unapproachable; I was shaking at the thought of spending my first day of junior year alone.

"Here's your schedule dear. I'll ask Marie to show you around" the office attendant smiled kindly, handing me my schedule.

"Mrs. Betty, I'm here!" came a rushed voice as the office door flew open. A girl a little bit taller than me stumbled into the office.

"Marie dear, show our new student around please" Mrs. Battum spoke to her as the girl "Marie" fixed her disheveled appearance.

"Hi there! My name is Marie and I'll be your first friend here at Dune Ridge High" She gushed, reaching for my hand. I stared back at her curiously, slowly holding my hand out for her to take.

Her blue eyes sparkled mischievously as she pulled me out the door, her bleach blond hair whipping behind her as she yanked me down the hallway.

"Well, we have almost the same schedule so I'll be in almost all of your classes and you can meet my friends and we can hang out after school and..."

Marie stopped suddenly, causing me to slam into her back. She released my hand quickly and glared up at a tall, shaggy blonde haired guy sauntering down the hallway.

"Well who might this newbie be?" the boy purred in a velvet, detached voice, running his long fingers through his hair and running his eyes up and down my body.

I frowned slightly. I could feel power surging through the boy's voice that forced me drop my eyes to the granite flooring.

"Alpha Logan." She lifted her eyes and nodded curtly. "This is Grace. This is her first day." Marie's voice was tight and forced, showing her obvious reluctance at telling him anything.

"Well hello there Grace. I personally welcome you to Dune Ridge." Logan whispered huskily as he grasped my hand and kissed the back of it. His plump lips caressed my skin in an act that felt sensual and inappropriate for a formal acquaintance. I slowly dragged my eyes from my hand and looked up at the irresistible stranger. Our eyes met and I felt a slight rush of attraction as he gazed down at me. His eyes were a mesmerizing light blue, like a newly hatched robin's egg, with faint swirls of grey and topaz.

He chuckled deep in his throat and released my hand, sauntered off without a word.

"Hurry up Grace! We're already late!"

Marie grabbed my arm roughly and continued to pull me down the empty hallway. When she finally released my arm, the momentum of her strength caused me to stumble into the wall.

"Thanks Marie, I hadn't yet introduced myself to this wall" I grumbled, rubbing the tender red blotch on my forehead. She raised her finger to her lips and knocked softly on the door. The door opened quickly, slamming against the wall with an echoing bang. A stringy bald headed man peered out.

"Yes?" He drew his words out lazily, his beady eyes focused on us, as if we were trying to solicit ourselves rather than attend our chemistry class.

"Mr. Raff, my name is Marie and this is the new student Grace Allen" Marie spoke up, shuffling her feet nervously and avoiding Mr. Raff's intense glare. "Ah, Yes Grace Allen, the new student. You're late," he rasped, squinting his black eyes at me. "Don't ever let it happen again."

As I nervously shuffled in after Marie, I noticed the students peering curiously in my direction. I kept my gaze down and quietly cleared my throat.

"Class, this is our new student, Grace Allen." The classroom filled with whispering and rushed chattering as everyone's eyes fixed on me. "Grace, there is an empty seat by Marie. You may sit there" Mr. Raff wheezed, turning back to his desk and slumping into his chair. He surveyed the room for a few seconds before turning to a magazine on his desk.

I turned away and slowly slid into the seat next to Marie. She turned towards me and chatted happily while I thought about how much I would love to jump out of the window to my right and climb into the old oaks by the entrance of the school. Any place sounded more pleasant than this chemistry class.

As my thoughts wandered, I felt a warm gaze on my face. The boy from the hallway, Logan, was sitting in front of me. He had turned his whole body around and his blue eyes were fixed intensely on me. He seemed lost in thought, rubbing his temple and scowling occasionally.

"Talk quietly, I have things to do." Mr. Raff barked from behind the science magazine he looked fascinated in. Immediately, the class broke out in loud voices, calling to their friends across the room, pulling up chairs and laughing obnoxiously.

"Grace, this is Elizabeth, Rose and Lynn, three of my friends. You'll meet the rest at lunch." Marie smiled, pointed to the girl who had plopped herself on top of my desk.

Elizabeth pushed her honey-blonde hair behind her ear and smiled warmly.

Her emerald colored eyes flashed as she leaned over and muttered something into Marie's ear. Marie giggled and turned back to me.

Elizabeth pointed to a tall girl shuffling over to us. She had short, multicolored blonde and red hair that she pushed behind her ears, huffing at the note in her hand. She sat on Marie's desk and glanced up at me, holding out her hand. "Lynn." She smiled kindly, but her jade eyes showed frustration and she immediately went back to reading the paper she had.

"Hi guys" I fluttered my fingers shyly, suddenly overcome with anxiety at the girls hovering over me. They started chattering lightly and invited me to join in the conversation.

My mind was racing at the fact that this was the first class of the day, yet I already was stressed and ready to go home. I looked up and noticed Logan was still facing my direction. His fingers were flying as he typed out a long message on his phone.

He suddenly looked up, catching my gaze. A broad smile slowly crawled across his face, but it didn't touch his eyes. I smiled quickly and looked down, pretending to doodle on my desk. I looked up under my lashes and noticed him blatantly staring at my face and body. I looked up and glared, but he simply winked and turned back in his seat.

The bell chimed suddenly, causing the entire class to jump in surprise. "Bye Grace!"

Elizabeth and Lynn waved behind them as they shuffled out or the classroom. I smiled, feeling a slight connection to them after just thirty minutes.

"Come on! Let's not be late again!" Marie grinned as she yanked me out of my seat and towed me out of the class and walked me to the next one.
