Chapter 6
I tossed a turned all night. Why would he do that? He told me he would never want me. I had gotten no sleep when my alarm went off at six in the morning. In a daze, I stumbled around the room getting ready for school. Sweatpants and a baggy jacket were the only clothes I could force myself into. When I went downstairs, Logan’s car was gone. A note on the table from Mrs. Wolff had my name scribbled at the top.
“Grace- Have Logan give you a ride to school. You’ll have the house to yourselftonight because we have a family meeting. Help yourself to any food in the fridge or movies in the theater room. The pool heater is on the side of the house. Call Logan if you need anything. –Maggie”
A paper bag lunch was set on the counter next to the note. Aw, I thought to myself, Maggie made me lunch. Smiling, I threw my backpack over my shoulder and headed out the door. Halfway down the street I realized how lucky it is that their house is so close to the school.
Since it was still early, there weren’t many students out front. “Grace!” a familiar voice called. I turned to see someone jump from the branches of a tree. “Hey Lacey,” I smiled, happy to have someone with me “you’re back from being suspended?” Lacey laughed, rolling her eyes. “Yeah, my brother talked to the principle. Apparently my suspension was over a week ago, but the Principle Codhan didn’t tell anyone that.” I smiled before a thought hit me.
“Lacey… aren’t you Logan’s sister?” She looked at me strangely. “Uh yeah… why?” I crossed my arms in front of me. “Why haven’t you been home to save me from the awkwardness of your family?” she blinked. “Why have you been at my house?” “Because dad said so.” came a gruff voce from behind me. I could practically feel Logan’s anger radiating off him. Lacey looked at me again, understanding flashing in her eyes. “Ohh, so this is her?” Lacey teased, jabbing Logan's side. He gritted his teeth before abruptly leaving, dragging Lacey with him. “Um, ok bye!” I called out. I saw her wave as she was pulled away backwards.
“Hi Grace!” Marie called as she jumped down out of a hulking red van. She ran up to me, leaping onto my back. I stumbled backwards while Leo and Tiffany laughed. “Fatty” Leo joked, walking up the stairs with Tiffany to the school. “So what’s new?” Marie asked, bending down to pick up her tote bag. “I moved into Logan’s house” I said calmly, sitting on one of the short brick walls. “Oh.” She replied, not looking surprised in the least.
Unknown hands pushed my back, launching me off the wall and into Storm’s waiting arms. A black haired girl with almond shaped brown eyes stood on the other side of the wall. “Thanks Phoebe.” Storm called to her, placing me gently on the ground. She stared before nodding and walking off. “Marie.” Storm nodded his head politely. “Storm” she scoffed, glaring at me. “Gracie, can I introduce you to my friends? “ He inclined his head to a group of people in a circle against some trees. I checked my phone. “Well I guess we have time before school starts. I’ll see you in class Marie?” Marie stared at me poker faced before turning around with a huff.
Storm put his hand on the small of my back, leading me to his group. “Phoebe” he called, the girl from the wall stood up and nodded respectfully. “Channing.” A black haired boy with huge blue eyes smiled warmly, offering me his hand. I shook it gently. “Conan” a short haired blonde glared at me, his dark eyes menacing. “Marina” a short girl with multicolored hair and green eyes waved shyly. “Randall” a tall girl with long brown hair turned her nose up snottily at the sight of me.
“Well, these are some of the teenagers in my pack. A couple of them are on vacation.” Storm sat down, patting his lap for me to sit. The cold stares of his pack made me uncomfortable. “Listen, thanks for the introductions, but I should go find Marie before class starts.” He stared up at me sadly. “Maybe I could hang out with you at lunch?” I offered quietly. “That would be great.” He beamed, turning to his group. I took that as my cue to leave.
I found Marie huddled with Lynn, Elisabeth and Lacey on the front steps of the school. I got surprising hugs from Lynn and Elisabeth before they left. “Ready for class?” Marie asked just as the bell rang. “Yep.” I replied as we entered the building.
-OoOoo00O-
Just as expected, the morning classes flew by. My stomach turned anxiously at the thought of eating lunch with Storm and his pack. Something about the way their eyes searched unnerved me. "Grace. Grace? GRACE, the bell rang!" Marie snapped her fingers impatiently in front of my face. Everyone had already left, even the teacher. I looked up at her. "Are you sure you aren't gonna come with me at lunch?" She stared at me like I was five. With a sharp laugh, she turned on her heel, leaving me alone in the empty classroom.
I slowly gathered my books, purposely dropping them just so I would have to bend down and pick them up. "Well, I can't say I don't admire the view, but I think it's time for lunch" Storm's husky voice smirked from the doorway. I straightened up immediately, heat flooding to my face. He sauntered over, brushing his hand gently across my back before snatching my books from my arms. "Hey!" I yelled as he sprinted, laughing hysterically, out of the room. I growled before reluctantly following the general direction.
I squinted into the bright sun and sighed when I saw Storm's pack in a menacing circle at the far side of the school. Storm was stretched out against a tree, looking completely content surrounded by his pack. Swallowing my discomfort, I bravely squared my shoulders and approached the group. Conan's eyes locked to mine, like a wolf watching his pray, no pun intended. I quickly sat down close to Storm, flinching away from Randall's stink eyes.
The only people not glaring at me were Channing, Marina and Phoebe. Channing was quietly whispering to Marina and Phoebe was staring into the forest, eyes wide. I cleared my throat while looking down at Storm's relaxed face. If not for his fingers tapping to an invisible beat on my book, I would have thought he was asleep. His dark hair practically gleamed from the beam of light falling perfectly on his chiseled face. I lightly poked his cheek. "Storm?" he didn't respond, but Randall and Conan quickly jumped up and speed walked away.
Phoebe hesitated before joining them, leaving the rest of us alone in our individual silence. "Storm?" I asked again, staring at his closed eyes. I poked his nose, giggling quietly to myself. Before I could blink, he had somehow managed to pull me by my wrist, on top of him, before flipping us over. I blushed profusely as everyone laughed at my expense. Storm's bright grin stretched across his face. It made me smile softly to myself. He looked down at me for a couple of seconds before nuzzling into my chest, giving a happy sigh of content. I flicked his nose playfully.
"So," Channing spoke up, smiling gently in our direction, "how are you liking our little town of Casila?" I looked around, catching the eyes of Logan's pack. They were all laughing and goofing around. Marie was braiding Elisabeth's hair while Nick and Lynn cuddled against a tree. Logan was sitting crosslegged with his head in a notebook, scribbling fiercely. Abruptly, his head whipped up, his eyes meeting mine. "Grace? Gracie baby is that you?" I jolted up, pushing Storm's body roughly off mine. Everyone's eyes were on me, curiously. I looked around franticly. "Dad?"
