Chapter 3

The rest of my day was the same, subtract the chaotic lunch scene. I got home at 2:15 on the dot. My bus pulled up to my grey three-story house.

"Guys! I'm home!" I shouted as I burst through the heavy brown door. "Grace! We're up here!" I heard my brother shout from the top of the stairway. I took my time clomping up the rickety stairway. "Jack? Jill?" I looked around the second floor of my house. "Up here!" I heard Jill shout from the third floor. I assumed they were in the game room, as the only other room on the third story is the attic/study. The game room door slammed open against the wall with a bang.Jill flung herself into my arms.

"Grace! Jack and Justin won't give me Princey!" Jill whined while clutching my shoulders and hanging like a baby spider monkey. "Who's Justin?" I asked, pleasantly surprised. They had just started school today, and Jack doesn't make friends easily. "Justin's the 10 year old that lives a block away, so he's going to play with us every day" Jill said, staring up at me with her giant brown doe eyes.

I smoothed her long brown hair away from her eyes, and with her still attached, walked into the game room. Surprisingly, everything was in order. The games were put away, the darts were on the dart board, and the video games and controllers were stacked neatly on the ps3. "Who are you?" a boy with blondish brown hair stared at me angrily. "Well I'm grace, and seeing how this is my house, I think I should be asking the questions." he stared at me for a couple beats, then shrugged and turned to the puzzle he and Jack were doing.

"Jackie-boy, no hug for your sister?" I said teasingly, watching jack scowl and wrinkle his brown doe eyes, identical to Jill's. He and his twin are alike in so many ways, hence why my mom and Rob named them "Jack and Jill". I was named Grace, because according to her, I was the saving grace in her teen years.

My mom had a steady boyfriend when she was 18, but when she told "My Father" she was pregnant, he split immediately. We haven't heard from him since, thank god. My mom and Rob are perfect for each other. My mom is a hairdresser and Rob is the boss of some big company, so we live well.

"I want cookies" Jack pouted and whined like a two year old. Even though the twins are 8, they still sometimes act like 4 year olds. "You can ask me nicely or you're on your own" I said, putting Jill down on a lazy boy sofa with a magic tree house chapter book. "Please Gracie with sugar on top?" I looked at Jacks pleading eyes and sighed. "I'll be right back" I called as I walked down the two floors of stairs.

I heard the key in the lock of the front door and turned to see my mom stumble through the door with several arms full of groceries. I caught several of them before they tumbled to the floor and placed them carefully on the island. "Hi mama" i said, taking the rest if the bags and making room on the counters. "Hey Gracie girl," my mom said kissing my forehead, "how was your day?" "It was fine. How was yours? You look tired ma." i brushed some lint off her shirt and hugged her tight. "I'm bushed. I'm going to take a nap before dinner. Okay baby?". "Sure thing ma" I said, pulling out the packet of cookies. While she was going up the stairs I heard a knock on the door.

"Coming!" I shouted, putting the cookies back in the packet. I opened the door and mentally groaned. "Hello Logan."

"Grace. I heard we had new neighbors and wanted to bring over something. What a lucky coincidence it was your family. May I come in? I brought goodies." Logan revealed a large wicker basket with home baked goods, coloring books and video games. "And this is for you." he said, revealing a white rose.

"Um... Thanks," I said, taking the rose from him awkwardly "and sure, I guess you can come in..." I trailed off uncertainly, leaving the door open and going back to the kitchen. He placed the wicker basket on one of the barstools. "You need help?" he slid over to me and stood far too close to my back. I whipped around and handed him the packet of cookies. "Take this up to Jack in the game room". He got to the stairs then turned and bowed. "As you wish my dear". I shivered. Gross.
