“One month.” Brianne whispered when we awoke the next morning. I checked the calendar and she was right, I survived one month without the vials and I planned on never taking them again, I felt free.
“I should probably head home.” I told her. “Mother and Father need to think that I drank it.” I kissed her sweet lips, got out of her bed, and got dressed.
“I love you.” Brianne stated. This was a new expression she taught me. She said that people of the older times said to anyone they loved.
“Love you too.” I smiled and left her house. As usual, I walked to Derrick’s house so that if anyone saw me, they would think that I was walking a normal route home. But unlike the other times, Derrick was sitting on his front porch.
“Hello Derrick, how are you?” I said as formally as possible. He smiled at me, but said nothing. “Is everything okay Derrick?”
“No, it is not.”
“What is the matter?”
Derrick pulled a piece of paper out of his pocked. “This.” He handed it to me, and my heart skipped a beat. The note read “55 Delver Street”.
“I found it on the ground that day we were on the field trip.” He continued. “I saw you pull it out of your pocket, then drop it.”
“Yeah,” I tried to make up a lie. “I found it there and I guess it fell out of my hand. I did not know what it was.”
“You see,” he laughed. “That is what I thought originally too.” Derrick stood up and walked towards me. “But then, I started getting calls from your Mother. She would ask me questions about you. She informed me that you were sleeping over, and I played along. You have not slept over my house in months, Prescott.”
I didn’t know what to say, Derrick had somehow caught me in a lie. Well, if anyone could accept what I had been doing, I knew Derrick was the right person.
“Are your parents home?” I asked.
“No, they went to work.”
“Okay, can we please go inside so I can talk to you?”
Derrick agreed and we walked in. He guided me to his living room, and we sat down on the sofa.
“This is going to surprise you.” I began. I took a deep breath, and let my smile go. Derrick’s eyes opened wide.
“Y-You. You. You are a…a Heartless?” He gasped.
“I guess that’s what you would call it.” I avoided looking him directly in the eyes.
“What would possess you to do such a thing?” He whispered, acting as if someone could actually hear us.
“Because, I was being brainwashed, and so are you.”
“That is a lie!” He stood up, offended.
“Well, it’s the truth, and I’m not going back.” I wanted to leave his house immediately, nothing felt comfortable.
“I am going to call your Mother.” Derrick informed me.
“No, you will not.” That would have been the worst thing that could happen.
“What else am I supposed to do?” His eye twitched quickly, but his smile was glued on.
