"It doesn't do any good to be unhappy about something that has already happened or that can't be helped."

Chapter One

"WAKE UP IT'S TIME TO GO OR WE'RE GOING TO BE LATE!" Rey screamed slamming open the door dramatically.

I flipped out of bed, falling face first onto the ground. I laid there for a minute in pain and then immediately sat up and felt a tank top thrown at my face. I heard frantic footsteps coming from my kitchen and I heard the microwave start.

"WHAT'S TAKING YOU SO LONG?! GET UP AND GET DRESSED!" I heard Rey run out of my apartment, toward his own apartment.

I threw the tank top on and slipped on a pair of shorts. I ran to the kitchen and saw a small bowl of oatmeal sitting in the microwave.

"Thank god, you're finally up. Okay," Rey started clapping in my face "We need to go before I loose my job, okay?" Rey said dragging me out of my apartment. We tripped down the stairs and sprinted down the street toward the subway.

"I'm....so.......out of.....shape." I panted, talking for the first time this morning.

"It's not even that far. It's literally only a block away.." Rey smiled at me.

"Oh, shut up. You go to the gym all the time. You'd never catch me there on a good day." I said looking up at his smug face.

"I'm going to slap that look off your face." I groaned.

"You're an idiot." Rey chuckled glancing at me.

I stared at him.

"You seriously just said that. I'm NOT an idiot. If anything, you're the idiot!" I said jumping and stretching out my arms.

"How am I the idiot?" Rey said with an amused expression on his face.

"You go to the gym for starters. That's pretty idiotic of you." I said rolling my eyes.

And that's how our morning went. He said or did something aggravating and I talked back with a rude remark or comment.

We have to take several trains and buses in the morning to get to our jobs. Rey works at a really popular bar downtown and he obviously has a bunch of work friends but I only have one work friend, Maddy. Maddy has been my work friend for a year or so. I met her a few years back during college and we quickly became best friends. Maddy's dad owns a bar called Bossa Nova. Maddy offered me a job there and I immediately accepted. I mean, who wouldn't accept a job with their best friend?

I entered the bar and immediately saw Maddy's blonde hair.

Maddy smiled at me from behind the bar and ran up to me quickly.

"Hey Kylie! Ugh, this place gets packed so fast... Luckily you're only five minutes late..." Maddy raised her eyebrow looking down at her phone. She looked back up and began talking again, "So today, we can just hang out behind the bar and be beautiful bartenders!" She giggled showing off her pearly white teeth.

"Beautiful bartenders?" I said looking at my mismatched shirt and shorts. My hair was knotted up and I'm pretty sure I look like a lost homeless person.

She looked at my clothes and then my hair and then back at my face and gave me the saddest look in the world. She grabbed my arm and pulled me into the girls bathroom.

"You're so lucky I'm your friend. Otherwise, you'd look like this all day." Maddy said pulling a brush and eyeliner out of her purse. She quickly brushed my thick brown hair and pulled it into a loose braid. She applied the eyeliner and mascara and smiled.
