The room was still cold with silence. It was dark, with only the light from the dirty window in Courtney's room glimmering in.
"You guys are scaring me." Courtney said.
"Do you know where she went today after school?" I asked, desperatly.
"Probably Starbuc-"
She was interrupted by Jay and I's foot steps. We were walking very fast, but not quite running. I sped down the hallway to grab my red pull-over sweatshirt and my keys. I tossed the keys to Jay and grabbed Courtney's arm. We ran to the car and drove frantically to Starbucks. Nobody said a word the whole car ride. The sound of Courtney's car door opening sliced through the silence and made me jump a little. Jay and I followed shortly behind her, covering our faces from the bright golden sun shining down. When we finally got inside, my friend, Isabelle, was on shift.
"Hey-" Isabelle started, until I cut her off.
"Was Jailene here after school?" I said quickly.
Jailene was Isabelle's little sister, so if something happened, this could be a problem.
"No, I don't think so. Maybe for a second. She ordered a drink, and after I gave it to her, she just kind of faded away. Haven't seen her since. It was about, a half an hour ago, I guess."
"She isn't here?"
"Nope. Oh, wait." she pulled a tiny little envelope out of her apron and slid it across the counter. "I came back from the bathroom and this was on the coffee brewer; it says your name on the front."
I've seen this handwriting before. It could be anyone. I know a lot of people. I'm popular. Well, not to be conseeded, but it could be anyone I know; I just couldn't place my finger right on top of it at the moment.
"What does it say?" I said, calming down.
"I don't know, opening other people's mail is a felony. I have to keep my record straight to get into a good collage."
"Yeah, yeah."
I flipped the lid of the envelope, and pull out a tiny note card. The note reads:
Haven't you caught on yet? It's just a game. Play by the rules, or get disqualified.
That's when it hit me.
