CHAPTER 8 - Prevailing Love

~  R ~

Renee's stomach churned as she watched Mrs. Weasley prepare steak and kidney pies in the kitchen, not feeling remotely hungry because of the excessive anxiety plaguing her consciousness. A brief Order meeting in the afternoon was scheduled to commence before the dinner party for the newly assigned Mediwitch and prefects. After which was another Occlumency training session in Spinner's End, and then finally a trip to Scotland to have a long-awaited conversation with Clarice.

Remembering the last time they met, Renee closed her eyes in attempt to fathom how she felt for her mother. No matter how she looked at the situation, she couldn't fully cast the blame upon her. Clarice would have met her death if she had not married Alexander, and the merrow also threatened to take the life of Philip and her own if Clarice had not cut her ties to them. But even if she offered to somehow finally play the role of a mother, she would not be able to take back the awful, deplorable years of abuse Renee had received from her father and grandmother. Clarice was wholly absent when she needed her the most, and that was the part that hurt her terribly.

Being distracted was Renee's only way of coping from everything that was going on in her life. Every single tome in the Black family library had been perused and pored over by her discerning self, knowing that she had to be incredibly prepared for her upcoming tasks at hand. She was no longer a just a student; she was finally given a real job and was actually on her way to becoming a licensed Healer. She found it blindly optimistic of herself to even think about pursuing a career at a time when she could be tortured or murdered at any given moment, but it was the only thing sustaining her will to live aside from her unyielding love for a certain black-haired wizard.

Everyone in Grimmauld Place seemed to be in high spirits except Renee. All of the adults went on a trip to Diagon Alley in the morning to buy all the books and supplies of the students currently living in the headquarters, leaving the underage teenagers sulking under Sirius' guard. Tonks ended up buying The Dueler's Art for Renee as well as a new copper cauldron and even a wand holster, saying it would be particularly useful if she expected to have a duel with someone. Kingsley bought ice cream for all of them; they ate happily as they waited for Mrs. Weasley to emerge from Broomstix and listened to Fred and George make hilarious jokes about the minors who were left in the headquarters, and it was at times such as that when Renee would be extremely grateful to be in the presence of such wonderful, laughing company.

Ron's new prefect status did nothing to halt his two older brothers from undermining his newfound authority. Hermione was adamant that they ought to start treating him with a little more respect, but they merely responded by saying that they regretted buying him a new set of school robes, and Ron didn't seem to care about anything except his brand new Cleansweep anyway. The twins told Renee all about Harry giving his Triwizard earnings to them, causing her to feel appreciation for the bespectacled boy who still obviously looked out of sorts from not having been chosen as a prefect.
