"Hey"
"Hola"
Silence enveloped the space that lay between us, drifting like smog and smoke, overlapping and existing in that cavernous hole that both parted and drew us together.
I wanted to tell him, I honestly did. When I asked my lips to part in submission, to make my vocal cords murmur the sounds I needed to utter, there was a voice that came from within, and spoke softly and soothingly. Hypnotising my words and leaving them dormant, lying flat, breathless on my tongue. My chest heaved and my rib cage swallowed the sentence in its entirety. And I sat there, just breathing. Words echoing in my head.
He sat there staring into the distance, the great big black sky of nothi-
"KITTTTYYYYYYYYY!"
The very loud screeching and deadly clomping of yellow doc martins found their way into the back corner of my current hide out. I shook my head laughing and closed the book I'd had my face buried in only seconds ago and braced for impact. As if on cue a bubbling mass of excitement came crashing into my lap.
"Mmjfghdjlkdesjfhsdjkh" I hopelessly mumbled into the confusion of fabric, hair and various cooking ingredients that covered my best friend Dakota.
"Nice to see you too" she announced satisfied with her greeting.
"Looks like you had a fight with a sack of flour and it won" I teased her, brushing the remnants of the encounter off her clothing at the same time.
"You win some you lose some" she sighed holding her hands up in mock defeat. "Anyways, Del wanted me to tell you that she wants you to make a lattice cherry pie or something or rather, and that your lunch break is over kitten." Dakota winked at me and uncurled herself from my lap.
"Nooooooo" I groaned as she yanked my arm and brought me back eye to eye with reality.
"Hush hush kitten, go make me pie" Dakota teased as she grabbed my hand and we flew past the never ending columns of books and out into the café.
