The next morning you awake at the crack of dawn.
"Some day off this is turning out to be" you think to yourself as you slink out of bed and throw on the same clothes you were wearing last night. After strapping up your boots, you head to the toilet and stare at yourself in the small mirror that had once came up in the box. You rub your tired, striking green eyes and brush your teeth, then comb your tousled black hair with a small brush. You tame it into a loose French side braid. After around two shucking years in the glade you'd had enough time to practise this little hairstyle and it hadn't taken you long to perfect. Your hand automatically brushed a piece of material that's constantly tied around your upper thigh as you let your hands drop to your sides and you leave the homestead. From your position you can see Newt and Thomas over by the North wall and guess he's showing the greenie the griever window hidden behind the thick, green ivy. You sit on the grass facing away from them and wallow in the cool morning breeze, savouring it as you knew the temperature would climb throughout the long day. Suddenly a foot appears next to your head and you shoot upwards only to see Thomas staring down at you, Newt having headed back to his hammock for a last bit of sleep before sunrise. Without saying a word Thomas slumps down next to you.
"How do you do it?" He asks you after a long pause but you merely raise your eyebrows at him questioningly.
"I mean" he starts again, "I mean, stay so positive when you can't escape this place". You smile and your hands reach down to the strip of material against your thigh and as if in reply you untie it and let it drop away. Thomas' eyes widen as he runs his hands over the white scars that tear across your upper right thigh.
"What happened?" He whispers as if to himself. "I gave up" you say and smile pityingly. "I gave up and was selfish enough to try and find my own escape out of this place."
You run your hands over the scars and stare at them as if you can still see the blood slowly staining them. "Afterwards, Newt gave me this bit of material to tie around it. He wears a similar one around his ankle. He also whittled my knife for me" You say and retrieve a slender blade with a wooden handle from your pocket. The handle had been carved with little rings that went around its circumference. There were six rings etched into the wood, "that's Newt's, Minho's, Alby's, Frypan's, Ben's and Chuck's" you say pointing to each ring individually. "All my best friends in this klunk hole. Newt said that if ever I did it again, it would be as if I was slicing through all six of them. I couldn't do that..." you suddenly realise you have tears in your eyes but smile and hand the knife to Thomas, "here, it's your turn. Wait one moment," you say smiling as you retrieve a second, less impressive blade from your boot. You hand that too to Thomas. "What, you want me to..." His voice trails off. "Of course I do" you say and push your hand on his chest, "I feel like we're gonna get along just fine" you finish with a smile and watch as he carves a seventh circle into the blade handle. You absentminded tie the top of your leg back in its warm embrace and yourself and Thomas watch as the glade slowly awakens around you and a dark skinned boy begins to make his way towards you,
"ah klunk !" Mutters Alby and you raise you eyebrows, "I made a bet with Minho that's you'd sleep in! You're gonna have to lie to him for me" he says smiling. "At least Minho trusted me to get up early" you chuckle, "too bad Alby". He smiles and proffers out his hand and you catch hold to it and he practically lifts you off the floor then begins to help Thomas up. You stretch your tired legs and make your way towards the box which comes up with supplies once a month and gesture for Thomas to follow you.
"Right so we'll start here, I'll show you around and explain about how our system works. Then, we'll talk about the maze, clear?" You say and he nods in reply. "And Tom? No questions until I've finished the tour but I swear I'll answer all of them".

This is probably one of my favourite pieces I've ever written I hope you're enjoying it I'm so sorry it's been so long since it was updated!!!!💚
