It takes you all morning to show every last inch of the glade to Thomas, introducing him to new faces as you go.
"So, there's nine different types of jobs here, each one lead by what we call a 'Keeper', for example this shank's the Keeper of the Track Hoes," you say as you slap a tall black haired boy in between the shoulder blades.
"You alright y/n?" He asks as you clap hands in greeting. "Ah and you must be the new green bean! The names Zart. From the looks of you I reckon you'll be joining me here." You nod in agreement and watch as Thomas and Zart clap hands the same way you two had done. As you walk away you glance at Thomas who looks slightly overwhelmed,
"I know he's over six foot and built like a tank but he's one of the nicest people here" you say nudging Thomas in the side. "You don't need to worry about him". As the two of you make your way to the North Wall, the tour now over you quickly explain the rest of the roles. "You've got the Builders and Bricknicks, very good with their hands but not much going on up here," Thomas smiles as you continue, "there's the two Med Jacks Clint and Jeff who spend most of their time bandaging the Slicers. Then you've got your Baggers, Sloppers, Cooks, Track Hoes of course and finally your Runners".
"But how do I know which one I'll be?" Thomas asks,
"don't worry about that" you say putting your hand on his shoulder, "we'll test you in each position until we find the right one for you". You trail your hand down his arm affectionately then slump onto the grass looking out into the maze and your friend copies you.
"But what if I want to be a runner?" He asks staring you dead in the eyes. You laugh,
"you got a death wish greenie?",
"I'm serious!" He retorts, "why can't I be a runner?!".
"Look," you say taking Thomas' hand, "no ones a runner in their first few months let a lone their second day! But, if you promise to do your bit in your new job, I'll recommend your name to Minho alright?", Thomas' fingers interlock with yours,
"but what if he says no?" He mutters his eyes leaving yours.
"Then," you say placing your hand on his cheek easing his head upwards and his gaze locks onto yours, "I'll take you out there myself".
"Why would you do that for me?" He asked squeezing the hand that's still intertwined with his.
"Because you're curious. Only one other person has ever asked to be a runner before". He raises his eyebrows in question and you smile, "me. So I know how frustrating it is wanting to run. But give it time ok".
Without giving Thomas anymore time to reply, you stand up quickly dragging him with you and amble your way back to the homestead. Chuck runs over to Thomas who punches him playfully on the arm in greeting and you can't help but smile. Chuck's probably had the worst time here due him being considerably younger than the other boys. During his first two weeks you allowed him to have your bed while you slept in the hammock in between Newt and Minho's. Most nights he couldn't sleep anyway so you held his hand and murmured fairy stories to him that you remembered from your past until he eventually fell asleep. The young boy was a Slopper with not a lot of close friends so you relished the fact that he and Thomas had become so tightly knit already.
You have the rest of the day free so after lunch you walk to a tree on the outskirts of the Deadheads and scale it, leaping up higher and higher until you settle in it's canopy. You sigh as you lean against the cold bark of the tree which is a nice relief from the baking sun which was shining in the centre of the sky. Slowly your eyes become heavy and you remember how little sleep you had the night before and doze of into a deep slumber.HEY!! next part is here!! Night upload more tonight? I hope you're enjoying! Thankyou so much for reading I love you so much💜💜💜💜
