* All real names in this story have been changed.
This story probably isn't for you. It isn't, in fact, for most people. I'm not writing it to educate. Those people who decide that they don't care about diabetes just won't read this, and there's nothing we can do to change it or to stop it.
There have always been misconceptions. There will always be the diabetic jokes, the pain, and the misunderstanding. But if there's something that's more important than any of that, it's this- we're not alone. We type 1 diabetics find each other, band together, and from then on we always have each other's backs. The second important thing to remember is that we need to own diabetes, not the other way around. Don't let it stop you from doing anything- physically, mentally, emotionally. If you give it the opportunity to take control, it sure as hell will. So don't. You can't change the fact that you have diabetes. But you can change how you use it- whether or not you take care of yourself, and if you're going to make a difference in the world because of it. You may be asking yourself, how could I possibly make a difference in the world by way of this crappy disease? First of all- I don't want to hear you use that word. Disease. Disease is the flu. Disease is something that inhibits you. And disease is something you can catch.
Diabetes is part of you. Like it or not, it's here to stay, at least until we find a cure, and the best thing to do is make the most of it.
