I've been delivering mail to the styles house for 12 years now and never once did I know that one of them was in the army. My sweet wife joined the army when she was finishing high school, you would never think she would do something that extreme if you didn't know her personally because she was the sweetest, nicest, cutest girl you've ever seen. She always had a smile on her perfectly glossed lips and her bright blue eyes flashed a certain brightness when you looked at her. I never thought she would talk to me until our senior year of high school when we were planning a senior prank. We were gonna hot glue everything down in the main office and the other offices. I grabbed a glue gun and headed for the nearest office and when I walked in there she was, as beautiful as ever. Her nice autumn hair falling to her shoulders and her outfit was put together precisely as usual. She was concentrated on the thing she was gluing and I was concentrated on her until I realize I had stopped in the doorway and other people were trying to get in to help out. I slowly moved into the room debating whether I should go help her or start on a different object. Until she looked up from the stapler she was gluing and said words that I thought I'd never hear "oh hey! Stan right, could you come give me a hand gluing this stuff on the desk?" she said with that beautiful smile that no one could ever say no to.
I stood there like a big idiot with my mouth stuck in a huge joker like grin, I quickly nodded and stepped to her. She handed me a pencil holder that hadn't been glued down yet with her nicely painted nails. I tore my eyes of her because I was staring to feel like a creep just staring at her like that so I started to get to work. "So Stan how does it feel to officially be a senior, the top dogs of our class." I definitely didn't expect her to engage in conversation with me but I went along with it like we talked on a daily "Oh yeah of course I cant wait to be able to make some choices around here and mostly get out of high school." " Yeah same here *giggle*" I didn't want her stop talking I just wanted to hear her talk to me like I was one of her close friends "Um so um what college are you going too?" "oh im going to Manchester university how about you" YESS YESSS YESS *EHM* I almost jumped for joy when I found out she was going to the same university I was going to. "Me too" I said a bit too loud. We continued talking like that while gluing everything down in place. We didn't stop there, we talked through out the day and at lunch and it was so interesting getting to know this girl. As we talked I found out that she was a big daddy's girl and wanted to do everything he did, her and her dad would ride around on four wheelers, go on fun camping trips, go hunting and hiking around everywhere even if it was just the backyard. She told me how when she was tiny her dad would tell her crazy adventure stories and how one day they would climb the tallest mountain in the world together. I just stared in awe how I thought this girl was simple because she had so much more to her then I thought!
We ended up getting something to eat after school that day and she told me how her father ended up going into the navy and how she was always interested in the military ever since her dad brought it up and would come home in his uniform with wide arms to her. She told me how she always wanted to know what it felt like to wear a uniform as proudly as her father did and that encouraged her to sign up for it her senior year.
We talked through the school year and actually became really great friends, she would invite me over to dinner and I got to meet this world famous dad of hers and he was very happy to meet me which was a huge surprise. We did all kinds of fun things like roller skating, go carting, and she even taught me to ride a four wheeler which I didn't plan on doing again anytime soon, she just laughed at me and called me adorable. Ellie was so much fun, she was like a living positive energy. Everything was great until she had to leave for basic training for a while, I walked her to the airport and she hugged me for what seemed to be ages so when she let go I felt empty and even though I knew she would back soon I felt like crying and running after her, but I didn't want to cause a scene for her so I just waved at her until she was out of view.
After a her basic training past and I heard from her dad that she was on her way back home and how proud he was of her for completing her goals. I expected her to be completely different and for her to be broken and super strict but as soon as she saw me she dropped her duffle bags and ran straight to me and her dad. She hugged her dad and wiped his tears away then she turned to me, I had no idea what to say so I just opened my arms for her and she flew right into them. We hugged for a good while before she pulled back and looked at me "wow look at you you've grown so much and got even more adorable" right then I knew she was the same Ellie that I came to love and know. "Aww well look at you in your fancy uniform, you look so professional and stuff." She strikes a couple of funny strict poses in her uniform and them let's out that cute laugh.
We threw a welcome back party for her and I decided that if Ellie can do brave things then so could I and so I decided to ask her out. I was so scared my hands got clammy and I got all fidgety. When I asked I expected her to just laugh at me and say we were just friends but she got up on her tip toes and kissed me on the cheek and said "it's about time" I was literally the happiest guy on the planet in that moment.
After that we grew closer and closer and she told me all about her experience on the base while sitting on my lap. She was so excited about every detail and I was happy to just listen to her. After we graduated we got a small flat together by our college and from there on things only looked up for me and Ellie. She was very supportive of everything I wanted to do and I supported her right back. After 4 years of dating I thought it was time to pop the big question, I could have just pee'd myself just over thinking of it all. I made it as special as possible by taking her back down memory lane and doing all the things she likes to do and then I asked her in front of her family at the dinner table. Her mother was so shocked she started to cry and her dad nodded in approval, her little brother just whispered that I was gonna get cooties but good luck. I looked to her for an answer and she looked at me and said "it's about time" and then she kiss me on the lips making both of us fall. The little boy started to squeal how gross it was so we got up and I shook her dad's hand and gave her mom a big hug. Then we left back home and gave each other a bunch of cooties haha.
