Religious belief has been present since the beginning of the human history. From Polytheism to Atheism. Although Atheism is considered as having no belief of an omnipotent being, I think it is still a religious belief. (Further explainations later.)
Since the beginning, many people believe that there is a being(s) that are much... powerful, a divine.
From the times of Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Norse, to the medieval ages, and even in the modern scientific technology, there is still the belief of a divine.
Where did this came from? The belief? Psychologists would say that the human mind would blah blah blah... Yeah, it's too long, but you know what they'll say.
But the fact is that, this religions, whether it is Paganism or Christianity or Islam or Buddhism, has a lot in common.
They talk of the Creation, of important events that shaped the world, and of the End.
If you go into extensive research, which I partially did since I live in a country with diverse religious beliefs (and I also love studying Mythology, especially Greek and Norse), you'll find some things that are very, very similar that you would wonder, who's the author?
For example, Norse Mythology, there is a snake which is sometimes called the Midgard Serpent who grew so large and so long it practically circled the whole world. This serpent, as stories go, would poison thr sky and start Ragnarok, the Norse version of the End. Now this story about a serpent is also present in Egyptian Mythology, although with minor variations such as the name since in Egyptian myth, Jormungand (The Midgard Serpent or World Serpent) is now called Apophis, also a snake, who would destroy and consume Ra and cause chaos in the world. Now see the similarities? Jormungand would poison the sky, Apophis would destroy Ra, who is the Sun God and roams the sky. They are also both snakes. Now this isn't the end since in Christianity, there is also the Devil, who is usually named as the Serpent, or Dragon. Now according to the bible, this Serpent will rise from the sea (correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure it was a body of water, and also it's similar on how Jormungand will rise) and start the Rapture. Even in the Indian myths, there is the Cosmic Snake.
So, how come this religions have a lot of common stories and similarities? Some would say because of the trade system of the world. Others would be on how every kingdom intermarries. I wouldn't be able to answer. All I know is that, there is a source for all of this. What are your thoughts?
