"Yes mom, we are still coming" I laughed "good, I like this one, she's smart, and really just simply wonderful... You two also look good together... Her hair always perfectly done, next to you and your charming looks, her dazzling smile...it just makes me so happy" I could hear her smile through the phone, making me feel sick to my stomach. "I have to finish packing up so I'll talk to you later, k, bye" I threw my phone on my bed just staring at it. My roommate Matt shook his head "charlottes going to kill you" "I already talked to her..." "Did you tell her why you broke up... Oh wait, you don't know why, you just got scared of commitment, because things were going great, you were the envy of the frat house, and now you lost Charlotte the best damn girl you've ever had..." "So I screwed up, I can find someone better" I shrugged it off, but Matt started laughing hysterically "better than Charlotte? Oliver get your head out of your ass, she was the best, she was gorgeous, smart, she didn't put up with your stupid shit, she stayed with you when you were so drunk, and took care of you, missing her classes the next day... She loved you, and you loved her and you know it, but your too stupid and arrogant to admit that you made a mistake, that you were drunk, and you said things you should never say and..." "So I was scared, obviously for a reason, so why bother" I then just left because I was not about to have Matt criticize my life.
"Charlotte, hurry up" I yelled waiting in my car, waiting probably for a very, very angry Charlotte to appear. She walked out of her Sorority house, acting as if everything was normal. "People think we're crazy" "yes well... We probably are" I muttered, turning up the radio to fill the awkward silence that was sure to come.
"We're lost just admit it Oliver" I had climbed on top of the car searching for a signal "no we're not" I insisted turning around for the fifth time. "Then where are we?" "Somewhere between South Carolina University and Florida" she rolled her eyes going back to painting her nails. "Why did we ever decide not to fly?" She asked five minutes later "because we were going to stay in a cute little b&b and have sex" I jumped off the car climbing back inside. "It's only a 7 hour drive"  she exclaimed "well considering we're lost I have a feeling it'll be longer" "so we are lost" "very much so" "let me drive" she sighed "you don't know anymore than I do" "my parents live in Florida" "they live in Connecticut" "they moved, I've been driving to Florida for a while now"
countless hours of awkward conversations that led no where, we arrived at the cute bed and breakfast where we were supposed to have countless hours of sex, which made it even more awkward. "We have to get this whole conversation thing down you know" I was practically banging my head against the wall waiting for her to get out of the bathroom. "It shouldn't be that hard, we just broke up like, what a week and a half ago...." She poked her head out the door, her hair soaking wet, "you see the problem is Oliver, that we should talk, but not about what you want to or what your parents want to hear, which are when we're getting married, how wonderful college is going, how many kids were going to have or where our summer home is going to be... We need to talk about why we broke up... And since you refuse to tell me why I'll still be upset with you which is worse than mad, angry, disappointed, or sad... Because those are specific emotions that go with specific reasons... Upset is all of the above, it's all the break up emotions on their periods..." Her voice had raised to much she was practically shouting at me... No, she was shouting at me.
There I sat on our rooms floor, there she stood in the bathroom, towel wrapped around her, her eyes glaring at me. "Charlotte, I've been trying to think of exactly what I want to say, because I only get one chance to explain it all..." "Yeah you do, and you know what you missed that chance, it's called right when you break up with someone... Not a week and a half afterwards idiot" she slammed the bathroom door shut again. I banged my head against the wall again, swallowed my pride and knocked on the door. "What?" Her voice was sharper than a knife and practically cut through me. "So are we going to kiss or..." The door was slammed in my face again "good talk... I'm gonna go get food"
