We were about to walk into the bar when she started shaking from head to toe "relax Lotte, it's just my parents, they love you, you love them, there's no big first impression to make, it's just walking in there and being you" she had stopped shaking as much "we're going to have to talk later" she whispered, then retaking my hand she pulled me through the bar door.
"Charlotte!" My mother practically squealed rushing to us, hugging her "hi Beth!" Charlotte actually sounded excited, but really my mother was, besides the fact that she thought I was proposing on this trip, Charlotte was also in the same sorority as her, loves to boat, loves dogs, hiking, swimming, camping, wine tastings, parties, and fashion... It's like Charlottes the daughter she never had..... Charlottes... The daughter... She never had... I can't believe I broke up with her, it's going to kill my mom...
"margarita for Charlotte, whiskey for Oliver, martini for Beth and a beer for me" my dad smiled taking his beer "so how's school?" "It's been great, I'm so glad to start my final year" Lotte smiled as we held our hands on top of he table "I subscribed to town and country last month and I can't wait to see your name under the pictures" mother was practically beaming at Lotte, when I said she loves her, I literally mean she loves her, wants to shop with her, hear about all that she does... It's like my mother has no female friends besides Lotte. "It'll be nice to have you at the office full time" my dad smiled at me "yeah" only I really don't think I want to work at the company even though it's expected... My younger twin brothers aren't expected to work for the company at all, they could be beach bums for all my parents really care.
"Blane and Briar are coming right?" Lotte asked "Is Lotte missing us again?" Blane came walking up from behind, Briar following, they wrapped her up in a hug lifting her up from the table "boys put her down" my parents were smiling and I knew they were thinking about how wonderfully we all got along and how much better it would be when Lotte and I were married and had little children running around. "I'm going to get refills" Lotte offered which we all obliged "let me help you" I followed her back to the bar "this is going to be treason to our parents" she muttered "I was thinking of the same thing" I glanced at the mirror behind the bar, where I could see them "their watching" I muttered slipping my arm around her waist "I wish they weren't" she mumbled under her breath but had a slight smile on that was all for show "I'm not going to kiss your lips, but I am..." "We aren't going to be able to get away with no kissing so just do it like we used to" she leaned into kiss me, standing on her tippy toes "we could try" I spoke moments before her lips touched mine in almost an innocent sort of way... Which she hasn't done since we first started dating, there was no motive for sex or making out, or even just another kiss. "I don't want to risk it"
"Here are the drinks" Charlotte announced passing them around "you'll never believe what the twins did again" mother had her lips pursed and was rapidly downing her martini "what school were they kicked out of this time?" I asked putting my arm on the back of Lotte's chair, hoping for a good story "university of Arizona... The party school" mother was so not amused, father was halfway to being drunk and Charlotte was trying very hard not to laugh "apparently they don't like it when you climb the building to get to class" Blane was sitting there smugly, looking proud, Briar just rolled his eyes "they also don't like it when you create a waterside in every building down the halls, and stairs, providing rowing boats that mysteriously disappeared from the rowing teams shed and wound up being floated down the halls like gondolas." Briar was obviously more impressed with his prank than Blane's "who wins this round Lotte? I've been deciding for so long" I smiled at her "your just encouraging them" my mother muttered "I like the gondolas in the halls... Extra points if you did it without the influence of a girl" Briar smiled even more "not at all... Penelope dumped me and I've been flying solo since" "sure" Blane rolled his eyes, our parents shaking their heads, wondering where they went wrong.
