"Mind if I cut in?" I asked resting my hand on Blane's shoulder "be my guest, she steps on my toes" she gasped "I did not" "oh, of course not" he winked, giving her a peck on the cheek "what was that?" "That's called human interaction dear... you used to know it so well with me" she muttered, "well I don't like it" I grumbled into her ear "is the poor olive oil getting jealous?" She teased "maybe" she laughed "Oliver, it's Blane for christ's sake, Blane the kid I helped get a prom date, he's like the little brother I never had" "Charlotte... I" I was interrupted by my parents coming over to say good night, but as soon as they left she eyed the door "why don't we just..." "keep dancing" "yeah... why not" I twirled her out, spinning her back in, she smiled brightly for the first time since... it had been a month or two I guess.
"Did I make you smile?" I asked, her head resting on my shoulders she looked up "of course... you made me happy" "no I mean really smile, was there a moment where I just made you so happy you could hardly like contain all your joy..." she was quiet, looking at our feet as we danced "sophomore year, you threw pebbles at my window, until I opened it, you had some freshmen steal a ladder, placing it against the side of the house, when I got down to the bottom, you drove me to the botanical garden, and we walked through their fairy lights, we hummed as we danced, terribly off key..." "I remember that night being a total disaster" "how?" "The kid grabbed the wrong ladder, the sound system wasn't working, it was colder than it should of been..." "Oliver it was perfect to me" her head laid back down, resting it on my shoulder as we danced.
We danced out of the ballroom and into the deserted hallway, dancing all the way down to our room. But just before we did, I looked out towards the ocean, only to see lights from the Bahamas's coast. Lotte pulled away from me, unlocking the door, "I could move on, if you would just tell me why" she muttered, I couldn't deal with that right now, I just couldn't... because I still don't know what to say. I flopped onto the couch "you can't honestly blame me for wanting to know why" "and I don't" "then why, can't I know" "I'm trying to figure out how to word it, properly" "well maybe we should of stayed together, I could of given you reasons to break up with me, all you would have to do is ask" "and what would you of done?" "I could of scared you, talking about our future, We could of had a huge fight out in the common area, I could of been insecure and jealous, over bearing... I would of found something... hell, I would of kissed another guy, had sex with him... because at least then I would know why we broke up... instead of this agony" she sat on the bed, leaning against the wall, staring out at the stars. "I'm sorry" "sorry doesn't give me an answer, Oliver" she sighed taking her jewelry off, as another night ended.
