A/N: this picture makes me want to cut the bitch who made that sign
I should probably mention, this story takes place pre-Human.
......
"Morning," Matt said sleepily as he entered the bus' main room, still holding on to Jimmy.
"Morning, love," Neil responded, leaning on the counter with a cup of coffee. "We stopped for an hour. Wanna go get breakfast?" Neil asked, taking another sip.
Matt held up Jimmy. "Sure, Neil, I'd love to," he said in a high-pitched voice, pretending the puppet was talking.
Neil smiled that this-is-why-I-love-you smile. "Great, let's go eat pancakes until we can't eat any more!" He chugged the rest of his coffee.
"Then I guess we better go to Ihop," Matt said as he went to put on clean clothes. He returned a few minutes later, running his hands through his hair.
They walked down the street, hands linked. A few people gave them dirty looks, but they were used to that by now.
When they reached the restaurant and were seated, they ordered a bunch of pancakes.
"Two lovebirds, I see," the waitress chuckled as she took their order.
"I'm going to go out for a smoke," Matt informed his boyfriend, "I'll be back in a few minutes."
"Alright," Neil replied. Matt left for the designated smoking area.
He sat outside for a few minutes, taking long drags from his cigarette.
He couldn't get his mind off of Jimmy. Why had he given Neil that look of hate? Why had he wanted him to keep the puppet, when it was clearly something he was proud of and worked hard on? Why had he seemed so scared and embarrassed when he had shown the others?
He shook his head quickly to clear it. It's nothing, Matt, he told himself.
But the questions were still there, nagging in the back of his mind.
......
It had been another good show. They began to clean up the stage, until Neil noticed Matt sitting at the edge of the stage, with a sad look on his face.
He walked over and sat next to him. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Did you see the poster?" Matt replied.
Neil sighed. "Yes, I did," he said as he put his arm around Matt. "You can't please everyone, Matt. We had lots of haters before you joined. Try to focus on the people who love you, okay? Like me." He kissed Matt's cheek.
"I guess you're right," Matt sighed and kissed him back.
"Alright, high school sweethearts, are you going to help or not?" Barry teased. The two stood up and began grabbing equipment.
Matt tried to take Neil's words to heart, but he couldn't shake the hollow feeling in his chest.
......
They crashed in a hotel that night. Matt had brought Jimmy along with him, as he had noted it had helped him sleep- there was something comforting about it.
He lay in bed, still feeling empty. Really, Matt? Thousands of screaming fans and you focus on the one who doesn't love you? he thought.
No matter how much he told himself that, he still felt unloved.
But as soon as held Jimmy tightly, he felt alright and his mind drifted to happier thoughts and quickly into sleep.
......
