Matt picked at the hotel's continental breakfast, which consisted of egg patties, hash browns, a muffin, and crappy hotel coffee. He didn't feel very hungry.
"Something wrong?" Neil asked him.
"Just not that hungry," Matt replied emptily.
Neil stared at him with a worried look on his face. "Last night still bothering you?" he asked.
"No. I thought about what you said and you're right," Matt lied quickly, not wanting to talk about how a puppet brought him more comfort than his boyfriend.
Neil was still not convinced, but decided to keep quiet.
They finished their breakfasts and starting loading the bus. Neil noted that Matt seemed more distant than usual around him, but not the rest of the band and crew, which was odd.
They started on their way to the next city, and everyone headed off to do their own thing. The band decided to hang out in the back room, to try to write something.
After a few hours and very few promising ideas, Matt looked up from his guitar and finally spoke up. "I have an idea." He started playing something that sounded like an opening riff.
He went into another riff, singing softly along with this one.
"I, I can be your painkiller, killer, killer..." he started.
"That sounds nice," Neil complimented and the rest of the band nodded. Matt wrote down the riff before they felt the bus come to a stop.
"Gas break," Dani guessed and they all left the bus to stretch their legs.
"Matt, are you sure you're alright? You seem distant," Neil asked as Matt leaned against the bus.
"Fine," Matt said as he lit a cigarette. He didn't even meet Neil's eyes.
"You know, if something's wrong, you can tell me," Neil said lovingly.
Matt sighed. "I don't want to talk about it right now, Neil."
"I understand. Let me know when you're ready to talk about it. I love you."
"You too," Matt replied emptily as Neil walked away.
Why is he always trying to pry into my life? he thought as he took another drag. Angry thoughts clouded his mind.
I need to call someone. He pulled out his phone and dialled. "Hey, Jimmy, it's Matt," he said when the other line picked up.
Wait a second. Where and when did I get his number? his subconscious thought, whatever.
"Hey, Matt!" Jimmy greeted cheerfully. He didn't seen surprised by his call at all, which was weird. "What's up?"
"Neil thinking he deserves to know everything about my life," Matt spat. "You?"
"I'm just listening to music. Jeez. If he really loves you, he should give you personal space." There was something extremely off about the way he was talking.
"Wait, you know about us?" Matt asked.
"Well yeah! You guys make it so obvious," Jimmy answered.
Do we really make it obvious? Matt thought, Maybe I should try to hide it more in public.
Somewhere in his mind, he knew Jimmy was lying, but he ignored it.
"I better get back on the bus. Talk to you later," Matt said.
"Aww ok. Love you," Jimmy said and hung up.
Matt froze. Did he really just say that?
He shrugged and added Jimmy as a contact. He felt no guilt from talking about Neil that way.
......
That night during the show, Matt avoided eye contact with Neil completely. Jimmy had made him think their relationship was obvious.
Later, Neil came up to him. "Hey, you seemed really angry during the show. You okay?" he asked.
"No, I'm not okay! I'm sick of you acting like you deserve to know everything about my life!" Matt snapped and stormed off.
"I just want to help keep you happy, 'cause I love you..." Neil choked out as he watched Matt leave the venue, a hurt expression on his face.
......
