"What is it?" Lizzy whispered in my ear as I stabbed my mashed potatoes with a fork absentmindedly. This was why I loved her. She knew that the last thing I wanted was the eyes of all the girls at the table on me and their questions as well. Although, I thought, it would be hard to get their attention now as Maddy gossiped about her cousin, a sophmore, getting pregnant.
"Connor." I managed to reply quietly, fixing my eyes solemnly downward.
"I don't get it. Just yesterday he was the greatest thing since sliced bread."
"Well sometimes people aren't who you think they are!" Standing, I walked away to dump my tray without another word.
"Jo," Lizzy jogged up to me and caught my elbow. "Please tell me. Did Connor say something?"
"No."
"Well, was it something he didn't say?"
"No."
"Did he do something?"
"No."
"Jo!" I took Lizzy by the hand and dragged her out of the cafeteria and to the bathroom. She kicked all the doors to make sure there wasn't anyone in the stalls before hoping onto the counter and swinging her legs over the side. I locked the door swiftly and then leaned against it.
"It was something my mom said." I admitted after a long silence of Lizzy giving me a look.
"Since when do you listen to your mom?"
Touché.
"It makes sense though, after I thought about it. Why asked me out after a week of knowing me. Why he's so touchy. Why he is such a great guy and chose-" I gestured to myself with my hands. "-this."
"What are you talking about!?"
"She told me, well, said... that he never liked me. He just wanted to... 'take advantage of me'." using her words to make the situation more comfortable for everyone, I explained slowly everything my mom said last night.
"'Take advantage if you'?!" Lizzy almost laughed. "Jo! That's ridiculous! Do you honestly believe Connor would-"
"I don't know what to believe!" I sighed, loudly. "I don't know what to think! I don't even fucking know this kid! And he, he just expects me to feel comfortable dating him after a week? For all I know my mom is right! After all, I am stupid. And naive." sliding down the door and on to the floor, I hid my face in my hands. Lizzy was at my side in an instant.
"You know, you're right. The whole high school, college dating thing can be weird and sometimes difficult because you can't see that person everyday and you don't know who else they talk to or hang out with..." I wondered suddenly if it was this hard for her and my brother. There had to be a lot of trust involved. But I knew they could do it.
"And of course, everything happening right off the bat was a bit overwhelming. I know it doesn't feel like you know anything about each other, but isn't that why you date someone? So you can learn more about them and see if you do have feelings for them?" I nodded. "Connor did move fast, yes, with the whole kissing-before-even-officially-dating thing but he was just overwhelmed by hormones!" We both had to laugh at that.
"As for the whole taking-advantage thing, I've known Connor a lot longer and I'm sure he has absolutely no intentions of doing that to anyone. Just give it some time, you and him together because I know he really likes you." Lizzy had already opened her mouth again, as if she had predicted my next question.
"You're smart, gorgeous, sweet and amazing. It's not so unusual that a great guy should be attracted to you! You should really have a little more confidence in yourself, you know?"
