Caleb invited me to go trick or treating later that day, I waited on the steps in front of my house because it what seemed like the appropriate place to wait to avoid the awkwardness inside the house. Giggling children raced by, their candy rocking inside of the pumpkin pals and their moms racing close behind. Halloween is my favorite time of the year and I can't even celebrate it correctly, instead I'm heartbroken/sprung/ possibly infatuated with this guy who isn't here.Caleb grabbed onto his little sisters hand and led the way through the pile of children, she followed with sugar curiosity and I smiled. It wasn't long before Symphonique was pulling Caleb in the direction she wanted to go - the big house with lots of scary decorations and paths of pumpkins leading to the grand treasure box overflowing with the good Halloween candy.
"The girl what expensive candy is, " Caleb watched as his little sister made her way back down the path of glory.
I chuckled, mistakenly looking down at my feet when I should have been looking at him because I could feel him looking at me, "where to next?" He was so patient with her, it was beautiful.
Symphonique pointed to the house opposite where we were standing, the haunted house that had a group of teenagers piled around it with suspicious cups in there tight grasp - Caleb and I's eyebrows both raised at the same time - Caleb picked up Symphonique's hand and then reached for mine and we were walking.
The haunted house was a no go, Symphonique sensed the fear cascading off the big kids after exiting the far side of the tunnel and she forfeited. You could see it in her eyes that she was sleepy, anyway, but the candy she had devoured minutes earlier was keeping her ablaze so getting her into her car seat was almost impossible. "Can I take you home?" Caleb asked, either flirting or blankly forgetting that this was my neighborhood and we were a street away from it.
"I live right there," I pointed up the street at no particular house.
He pointed to his car parked against the street in front of us, "my car is right here."
We both blushed at the same time.
He didn't speed through the neighborhood, he was literally going 5mph and braking, frequently, when the children would randomly forge in front of the headlights - it took him ten minutes to make it to my driveway and two more to completely park because again with the children.
Caleb flopped onto the back of the seat, he was about to say something, I could feel it until his phone lit up and a picture of Ashely Fitzgerald graced the screen. Beautiful, she is. He looked surprised, but I wasn't, not in the slightest. I awkwardly waited for him to silence it but he was clearly nervous so he just let the ring tone ring. After the third call, and two text alerts later I was waving at him from outside of his car.
Happy Halloween.
