Both Sirius and Lily were close to their siblings before they came to Hogwarts. After Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor, Sirius' family was ashamed to be related to him and Regulus also started ignoring his brother. Petunia was jealous of Lily's abilities, and immediately distanced herself from Lily. And although Sirius and Lily could never replace their own siblings, both of them found a sibling in each other.
