III

I thought a lot on what Arryk said over the next few days. Maybe if I kept my fear inside, Gaebryil would not seem to have all of the power over me that he did. Maybe I would have some of the power then. But what in the world would I need it for?

When I got to Spanish class I had decided that I was going to try to keep my fear locked away and see where it got me. So when he walked in, he still refused to take his cloak off in class, and sat next to me, I hid my fear as best I could. I concentrated on slowing my heart rate and keeping my eyes on my paper, writing nothing in particular, just trying to give me an excuse to not look at him. I figured since he was blind, he would not know the difference.

He sat down next to me and kept his head high looking forward. I was getting nowhere I realized. He still thought he had all of the power. So I sighed audibly, making it seem that I was comfortable and very bored.

He cocked his head at a slight angle in my direction. I could not see his face, but it seemed he was more interested in me than the rest of the class. Or I was just imagining it, which was the most likely of the two. So I put the other out of my mind.

For the rest of the hour, we were both quiet. As soon as the bell rang, I was out of my seat and left the room in few short strides. When I turned the corner to go to lunch, I caught a glimpse of Gaebryil. He was standing by his desk…looking straight at me. His eyes got very bright and began to glow. Under the hood, darkness and then two bright, light blue eyes looking at me.

I did not show my fascination, interest, or fear. I just kept walking and acted like I had not noticed. As I walked to the cafeteria, I felt cold chills go down my spine, and I felt a pressure in my skull, like I was under water. But just as quickly as it was there, it was gone, and the cold chills vanished as well.

Later in seventh period, Gym, Mr. Simms told me to work out again after school, and to just do it for the rest of the year unless he told me differently. I felt anger well up inside me, but said nothing. I would work it out of me later. A put on my sweats and my sports bra, put my IPod in and headed into the wrestling room. I was happy to find that he was not there, but slightly disappointed as well. That was irritating. But I jogged to the back of the room and stood beside the boxing bag just looking at it for a moment. I knew how to box because I took karate when I was younger. I sat down and meditated for a few minutes.

When the meditation was over, which actually took fifteen minutes. I took five minutes to stretch and then began to punch the bag. I vaguely noticed the change in music from hip-hop to hard rock. I welcomed the change and punched to the beat. I began throwing in kicks and swists and just went all out. I did not think about what I was doing. I just the energy flow through me and the actions form by themselves. When I was breathing heavily and sweating, I stopped and did some more stretching before I began to start jogging around the room. My head was down and my music blaring in my ears. I did not feel anything while I ran by the door toward the other side of the room again.

I kept running and began to pick up the pace a little at a time. Soon I was sprinting and then I brought my head up and looked at where I was running as I picked up more and more speed. I looked up just in time to Gaebryil walk in the room. He was five feet in front of me and I knew I could not stop in time or turn in time. I slowed down but ran smack into him anyways.

He yelled something that sounded like a curse in his language. And then Arryk walked in with Darryk. I was sprawled on top of Gaebryil and he had his head on the floor with his eyes closed. It did not look good. But hopefully they would know that I did not do this on purpose.

They looked at us for a minute and then broke out laughing. Arryk doubled over and Darryk fell over. I blushed scarlet but Gaebryil only opened his eyes. And then I saw the color change. His eyes were now black outlined with bright red. I jumped off of him and backed up until I hit the wall. I yanked my headphones out of my ears and tried to apologize to him, but my voice did not carry over the twin’s laughter.

“Did we interrupt anything?” Arryk said in a breathless voice between laughter. Darryk laughed harder. Gaebryil got up and looked at the two.

Gaebryil looked at the two and yelled something in their language and the twins laughter immediately stopped.

“Come on, Ryil!” Arryk said in a defensive tone. “We know nothing happened between you two! It was just a funny thing to walk into.” He looked at me then. “And by the look on her face, I know that she did not mean to fall on you.”

Gaebryil said something else that involved my name and stormed out.

When he was gone the two looked at me and then Arryk turned to Darryk and said something in their tongue quietly and Darryk left leaving me and Arryk alone.

“Before he left, Gaebryil told me to tell you that if you talk to him, look at him, or anything that he does not like, he will not hold back his anger. You are lucky that this is Friday. Go home and stay there for a while. When you come back on Monday, be careful and work out outside or something. I have no doubt that he will do something to you. Again, be careful. I would not like to see him go off on you.” He gave me a meaningful look then, and was silent for a minute while he thought. Then he looked at me again and said, “Come with me.”

He turned around quickly and jogged quickly down the stairs. I had to run down them to keep up with him. And when he hit the bottom of the stairs he ran to the door and went outside. I sprinted after him and found him right outside the door talking to someone on the phone in his language.

When he hung up the phone, he turned to me and said, “I am going to give you some protection. It will help, but if he is angry enough, Gaebryil will dispatch of it like it is nothing.”

He then walked over to the parking lot. I followed him, pretty sure I he still wanted me to. He stopped by a black Jaguar and again turned to me. “Get in,” he said with a smile. He then added with a wink, “If you dare.”
