I stare down at the torn piece of notebook paper. Was this actually happening? Did I really have a secret admirer? Who was it? This was only my first day here, I hardly knew anybody. How did they even know where my locker was? Dozens of questions were spinning through my head as I still stood staring at the note in my hands.

I quickly shove it into my notebook and slam the locker door shut. I look around to see if anyone had been watching me secretly, but thankfully most of the students were piling out the doors to head home.

I follow the crowd towards the doors and immediately spot my mom sitting outside waiting in the white cadillac. I can see that she's talking to someone on the phone.

I open the door and hop in. She gives me a quick glance and smile before taking off.

"Oh, really?" She says into the phone.

"Well I don't think we have anything planned, we'll try to make it."

I stare out the window and listen to her conversation. Great, sounds like she's dragging me into something else again.

"Alright, we'll see you there! Bye!" She hangs up the phone and lays it in the seat.

"What was that about?" I ask curiously.

"Nothing. Just that the neighbor invited us over for dinner tonight. You don't have any plans, do you?"

I sigh, "no, but do I have to go?"

"Yes, Rachel! We need to make some friends. And besides, she said she has a son around your age."

"ugh, MOM!" I say slightly irritated. I hate meeting boys. I'm always so awkward. But it's not like I'm gonna talk to him anyway.

"Don't even try to talk your way out of this, you're going!" She says as we approach our house. I sigh in defeat as we come to a stop and I get out of the car and walk straight to my room. There was no way I wanted to go to this dinner. I wonder if the guy is cute?

Wow, I really need to not let my mind wonder. Who even cares if he's cute?

You do idiot, my subconscience mocks me.

Well either way, he probably wouldn't be interested in me.

I walk over and grab some homework from my bag. Gotta stay caught up with everything.

A motion from outside my window distracts me. I go over and peak out. It's just a woman across the street watering her flowers. I never realized how many flowers she actually had in the yard. They all looked so beautiful, all of the bright colors stood out tremendously against the white siding on the house.

"Be ready by 5 Brooke!" My mom calls up to me. It was already 4:15, which gave me a little time to prepare myself.

Once I get my hair curled in loose waves on the bottom and brush my teeth, along with applying a bit more makeup, I'm just about ready.

I go to my closet and try to choose something to wear. Was it going to be a fancy dinner, or just a casual one? I decide to go with a plain and casual cream colored dress with a brown belt going around my waist. It would work for casual, and slightly fancy.

I slip on a pair of flats just as it turns 4:58. I grab my purse that hangs across my body and slide my phone inside.

I turn off my light and walk downstairs to meet my mom who is already standing next to the door waiting.

"Ready?" She asks, slightly adjusting her skirt.

"Yep. Where's Gabe?"

She opens the door and steps out, "He's sick. I figured he would be okay staying here by himself."
